Chapter 9 - The Crimson InvitationThe fragile peace of the eighty-eighth floor was shattered on a rainy Friday evening when an unexpected delivery arrived at the private elevator.

It wasn't mail. It wasn't a syndicate report.
It was a heavy, crimson envelope sealed with black wax bearing the crest of the European Syndicate—the ancient, untouchable council of families based in Geneva that even the Ashford Syndicate had to treat with cautious respect.
Mrs. Gable carried the envelope into the drawing room with trembling hands, setting it down on the glass coffee table as if it were ticking.
"From overseas," Mrs. Gable said grimly. "Sent directly by courier with instructions to be opened only by Kendrick Ashford... and Katherine Sterling."
Willa frowned, walking over to the table. She stared at her restored family surname stamped cleanly into the black wax.
Kendrick walked in from his study, buttoning his jacket. He glanced down at the crimson envelope, his expression instantly darkening into a mask of pure ice. He picked it up, broke the wax seal with his thumb, and unfolded the heavy parchment inside.
He read the lines in silence. As his eyes scanned the text, a muscle ticked dangerously along his jawline.
"What does it say?" Willa asked, her heart skipping a beat.
Kendrick handed her the parchment.
To Kendrick Ashford and the surviving heir of the Sterling Estate, The European Council has reviewed the audit of the New York branch. The framing of the Sterling accounts by Barrett has been officially acknowledged. However, according to ancient syndicate law, a blood debt of three hundred million dollars cannot simply be erased by internal restructuring. In forty-8 hours, the Envoys of Geneva will arrive in Manhattan. If the Ashford Syndicate wishes to retain its sovereignty on the East Coast, the debt must be paid in full—or the bloodline of Sterling must be permanently extinguished to balance the ledger.
Willa’s breath hitched. The paper trembled slightly in her fingers.
"They're coming for me," Willa whispered, the cold reality washing over her. "Even though Barrett is gone, the European Council still treats the Sterling name as a liability."
"They treat you as leverage," Kendrick corrected, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying register. He stepped close to her, his large hands resting firmly on her shoulders. "They think they can walk into my city, issue an ultimatum, and take whatever they want."
"Kendrick, the European Syndicate has armies that span continents," Willa warned, looking up into his dark eyes with desperate urgency. "If you protect me, you'll be declaring war on the entire global underworld."
Kendrick let out a cold, humorless laugh.
"Let them come," Kendrick said, pulling her just a fraction closer. "They think I'm just a mafia boss who bought his crown. They forgot that I built this empire out of blood, fire, and absolute defiance."

He looked down at little Penny, who was watching them with wide, solemn gray eyes, then back to Willa.
"Nobody touches what belongs to my family," Kendrick declared. "Nobody."
