Chapter 5 - The Chessboard and the QueenThe morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, golden streaks across the massive glass windows of the eighty-eighth-floor suite. But inside, the atmosphere was thick with the silent, heavy tension of a storm about to break.

Willa stood by the window, wearing a fresh, tailored black silk blouse and charcoal trousers that Mrs. Gable had quietly laid out for her at dawn. She looked down at the swirling traffic miles below, her mind replaying the previous night’s horrors like a broken film reel.

Katherine Sterling.

The name was a death sentence in this city. Every capo, enforcer, and syndicate boss on the East Coast knew that the Sterling family had allegedly embezzled three hundred million dollars from the Ashford Syndicate's offshore accounts before their execution.

The door opened softly, and Mrs. Gable entered carrying a silver tray with coffee and fresh pastries.

"You didn't sleep," Mrs. Gable noted quietly, setting the tray down on the table.

"How can I sleep when I'm standing in the cage of the man who ordered my family's execution?" Willa asked without turning around, her voice a sharp whisper.

Mrs. Gable sighed, walking over to stand beside her. "Mr. Ashford didn't order the execution because he was cruel, child. He ordered it because he was lied to. Back then, the council presented him with forged documents proving your father was selling syndicate secrets to the Russian mob. It wasn't until months after the fire that Kendrick discovered the documents were fabricated by Barrett."

Willa slowly turned her head, her eyes wide. "Barrett?"

"Barrett wanted your father's seat on the inner council," Mrs. Gable explained grimly. "He framed your family, burned the house down to cover his tracks, and made sure Kendrick signed the execution warrant under false pretenses. When Kendrick found out the truth a year later... well, let's just say Barrett has been walking on thin ice ever since."

Before Willa could process this staggering revelation, the heavy doors opened wide.

Kendrick strode into the room, impeccably dressed in a custom charcoal three-piece suit, his silver tie pinned neatly against his chest. He looked like an apex predator ready to claim his territory.

"Get your coat, Willa," Kendrick commanded, not breaking his stride.

Willa straightened up, crossing her arms defensively. "Go where? To another trap? To Barrett's estate?"

"To the weekly syndicate council meeting on the fiftieth floor," Kendrick replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. "Barrett called an emergency vote this morning. He wants to strip me of my title, claim I've lost my mind by harboring a 'subversive waitress,' and take control of the East Coast empire."

Kendrick stopped right in front of her, extending his hand, palm up.

"Barrett thinks he's cornered the king," Kendrick said, a lethal, confident smirk playing on his lips. "He doesn't realize I've just brought the true queen onto the board."

Willa stared at his large, powerful hand. Taking it meant stepping directly into the lion's den, walking into a room full of hardened killers and cutthroat bosses who would tear her apart the second they realized who she was.

It meant stepping into total, unadulterated war.

Slowly, deliberately, Willa slid her hand into Kendrick's, letting her fingers lock firmly around his palm.

Kendrick’s grip tightened instantly—firm, unbreakable, and absolute.

"Let's go show them what happens when ghosts come back to haunt the living," Kendrick said softly.
