Chapter 8 - Shadows and SanctuaryThree days had passed since the dramatic upheaval in the fiftieth-floor boardroom.

The Ashford Syndicate had undergone a violent, silent purge. Barrett’s loyalists were systematically removed from power, their assets seized, and their influence neutralized before they could mount a counter-offensive.
Yet, up on the eighty-eighth floor, life had taken on a strange, surreal rhythm of peace.
Willa no longer wore the stained black uniform of a catering waitress. Instead, her wardrobe had been replaced with elegant silk blouses, tailored trousers, and fine cashmere sweaters that suited her true heritage as a Sterling. But despite the breathtaking luxury of the penthouse suite, she spent most of her afternoons sitting on the plush rug in the drawing room, playing quiet games of blocks with little Penny.
Titan lay curled nearby like an oversized grey rug, occasionally thumping his heavy tail against the floor whenever Willa laughed.
The door to the private study opened, and Kendrick stepped out, rolling up his shirt sleeves to his elbows. He paused for a moment, leaning against the doorframe to watch the scene unfold before him.
For three years, his home had been a silent, haunted fortress. Ever since his wife’s tragic death and Penny’s subsequent retreat into absolute mutism, the penthouse had felt like a tomb.
Now, the sound of a child’s genuine laughter echoed off the marble walls for the first time in years.
"You're staring again, Mr. Ashford," Willa said without looking up, stacking another wooden block onto Penny’s wobbling tower.
Kendrick pushed off the doorframe and walked over, lowering his massive frame onto the rug beside his daughter. Penny immediately leaned over, resting her head against her father's shoulder.
"I'm observing," Kendrick corrected smoothly, his dark eyes fixed on Willa’s profile. "Trying to figure out how a waitress who was supposed to be a frightened nobody turned out to be the most dangerous woman in Manhattan."
Willa turned her head, meeting his gaze directly. "Survival teaches you things you never wanted to learn. When you spend six years hiding in the shadows, you learn to read every predator in the room."
"And am I a predator, Katherine?" Kendrick asked, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register that made the air between them suddenly feel electrified.
"You're the apex predator," Willa replied without blinking. "The question is... what are you going to do with me now that I'm standing right in front of you?"
May you like
Kendrick reached out, his long, scarred fingers gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His touch lingered just a fraction longer than necessary, his thumb brushing lightly against her cheekbone.
"I told you on the first night," Kendrick murmured, his amber eyes burning with an intense, unwavering focus. "You stay."
