Chapter 5 - Secrets Unmasked

The room smelled of gunsmoke and spilled bourbon. Marcus groaned against the floorboards, blood pooling from his broken nose onto the pristine wool rug.

Damian stood over him, breathing heavily, his knuckles bruised and bleeding. He looked down at Marcus like a god of judgment looking at an insect.

"You thought you could buy off my guards, poison my wine, and steal my empire while I lay helpless," Damian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, icy whisper. "You forgot one crucial thing, Marcus."

Marcus spat a mouthful of blood, glaring up with pure venom. "What? That you're a lucky bastard?"

"No," Damian replied coldly, glancing over at Lila, who was happily examining the fallen silenced pistol with wide, curious eyes. "I learned that in this world, power isn't about how many guns you hold or how much money you hoard. It's about who you can trust when your heart stops beating."

Damian motioned to Viktor. "Take him down to the basement vault. Strip his accounts, lock him in isolation, and let the federal prosecutors know we have a mountain of digital evidence ready to hand over by morning. I want his entire network dismantled piece by piece."

"Understood, boss," Viktor grunted, hauling Marcus up by his collar and dragging him screaming out of the suite.

The heavy doors slammed shut, sealing us back inside the golden cage.

The tension in the room slowly dissipated, replaced by a heavy, profound quiet. Damian exhaled a long, shaky breath and sank back into his leather armchair, pressing a hand to his chest. The color in his face looked slightly better, but the physical toll of the past twenty-four hours was undeniable.

I hurried over to Lila, scooping her up into my arms and checking her over frantically. "Are you okay, sweetheart? Did he hurt you?"

"No, Mama," Lila signed, giggling as she pointed at Damian. "The bad man dropped his shiny toy. The big man was very brave."

I looked up to find Damian staring at us with an expression I had never seen on his face before: a soft, vulnerable warmth that completely transformed his rugged features.

"She saved my life, Clara," Damian said softly, holding out his hand. "Again. If she hadn't distracted him by walking into the line of fire, that bullet would have found my heart."

"She didn't know what she was doing, Mr. Volkov," I said defensively, clutching Lila tighter. "She's just a child. She shouldn't have been anywhere near this violence. This is why we have to leave. Grayhaven House is too dangerous for us."

Damian slowly rose from his chair. He walked toward us, stopping just a few inches away. His towering frame cast a protective shadow over both of us.

"And where will you go?" he asked gently. "Marcus's associates are still out there in the city. Without my protection, you wouldn't last forty-eight hours."

I bit my lip, knowing he was right. I had no money, no family, and nowhere to hide.

"Then what do you want from us?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and defiance. "Are we your prisoners now?"

May you like

Damian reached out, his calloused fingertips gently brushing against Lila’s cheek. The little girl leaned into his touch, smiling up at him.

"Not prisoners, Clara," Damian whispered, locking his dark eyes onto mine. "Partners. Stay here at Grayhaven House. Help me rebuild what was broken. And in return... I swear on my life that no one will ever lay a finger on you or your daughter again."
