Chapter 8 - A New Empire and The Final Beat

The interrogation in the subterranean basement lasted less than ten minutes.

The assassin turned out to be a rogue mercenary hired by Viktor’s former second-in-command—a bitter survivor of Marcus’s network who had escaped the initial purge and wanted revenge against Damian’s new administration. By sunrise, Damian had personally hunted down the remaining cell in an abandoned warehouse across the bay, effectively wiping out the last threat to Grayhaven House.

Upstairs, the sun broke through the heavy Baltimore clouds, casting warm golden rays across the marble floors of the master suite.

Lila was sitting on the plush carpet, happily building a towering castle out of wooden blocks, completely unfazed by the night’s terrifying ordeal.

I stood by the window, watching the gardeners tend to the roses outside. My shoulders felt lighter than they had in years. The heavy, oppressive fear that had defined my life since I arrived at Grayhaven House was finally gone, replaced by a strange, unshakeable peace.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Damian walked in.

He had changed into a fresh crisp shirt, though a faint bruise lingered along his jawline from the scuffle. He walked over to where Lila was playing, dropping down onto one knee to help her place the final block on top of her castle.

Lila squealed with delight, signing a enthusiastic "Thank you!" and giving Damian a quick, affectionate hug around his neck.

Damian froze for a fraction of a second, unaccustomed to such pure, unfiltered warmth, before gently wrapping his arms around her small frame.

He stood up and walked over to where I was standing by the window. The morning light illuminated the soft, profound sincerity in his dark eyes.

"The perimeter is secure, Clara," Damian said softly, leaning against the glass beside me. "Permanently. No more assassins. No more traitors. Grayhaven House belongs to us now."

I looked up at him, my heart doing a strange, fluttering dance that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with hope.

"And what happens to us now, Damian?" I asked, using his first name for the very first time. "Are we still just your partners in survival?"

Damian reached out, gently taking my hand in his large, calloused palm. He interlaced his fingers with mine, holding on as if he never intended to let go.

"Survival was just the beginning, Clara," Damian whispered, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against the back of my hand. "My heart stopped beating the day they poisoned me. But your daughter brought it back to life... and you taught me why it was worth saving in the first place."

He looked deep into my eyes, a breathtaking smile finally breaking across his rugged face.

"Stay here with me, Clara. Not as a maid, not as a guest... but as my queen. And let me spend the rest of my days making sure neither of you ever has to be afraid again."

I smiled, tears of relief and joy spilling over my lashes, and leaned my head against his shoulder as Lila’s happy laughter echoed through the sprawling, golden halls of our new home.
