Chapter 7 - The Breach

My heart stopped.

"Lila," I gasped, spinning around and dashing toward the study door before Damian could even react.

"Clara, wait!" Damian barked, his hand instantly darting inside his tailored jacket to pull out his 9mm sidearm with terrifying speed.

We burst into the hallway just in time to see smoke billowing from the west corridor. Two of Damian’s elite guards were slumped unconscious against the mahogany wainscoting, bleeding from head wounds.

Standing ten feet away, outside Lila’s bedroom door, was a tall, heavily armored figure wearing a tactical balaclava and holding an assault rifle fitted with a thermal scope.

"Target secured," the intruder muttered into a shoulder mic. "Moving to extract—"

"Drop your weapon!" Damian roared, leveling his pistol straight at the intruder's head with lethal precision.

The armored assassin whipped around, but instead of raising his rifle, he reached down and grabbed something that made my blood run instantly cold.

Lila.

The assassin had slipped into her room through the private connecting balcony while we were outside. He now held my four-year-old daughter tucked firmly under one arm like a sack of grain, pressing the cold steel barrel of a backup pistol directly against her temple.

"Ah, ah, Volkov," a distorted, synthetic voice hissed through the assassin's comms unit. "Drop your gun, or the kid's brains decorate this expensive wallpaper right now."

My knees buckled. I let out a strangled, primal scream that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

"Lila!" I sobbed, taking a desperate step forward. "Please! Let her go! Take me instead!"

Damian didn't drop his gun. But for the first time since I had met him, his face turned the color of ash. His hand shook slightly—not from fear for his own life, but from the agonizing realization that someone was holding his only salvation hostage.

"Who sent you?" Damian’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the hallway like thunder before a storm. "The Italian syndicate? Or the remnant loyalists from Marcus’s crew?"

"Does it matter?" the assassin laughed coldly, tightening his grip on Lila. The little girl was crying softly, her pink cochlear implant blinking desperately in the dim corridor light as she reached out her tiny hands toward me.

"Mama..." she whimpered.

Something inside Damian snapped.

The cold, calculated mafia boss vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a ruthless predator defending its pack.

"You made one fatal mistake," Damian whispered, his eyes locking onto the assassin with absolute murderous intent.

"Oh yeah? And what's that?" the assassin mocked.

"You brought her into my house."

With blinding, supernatural speed, Damian didn't aim for the assassin’s chest. He fired directly through the assassin’s shoulder joint.

Bang.

The heavy thud of the suppressed round echoed down the hall. The assassin screamed in agony as his arm shattered, dropping the pistol instantly.

Before the man could recover, Damian closed the distance across the hallway like a striking panther, slamming his heavy combat boot into the intruder’s chest and sending him crashing backward against the marble wall. Lila slipped free from the collapsing arm.

I dove forward, scooping my daughter into my arms and burying my face in her curly hair, sobbing uncontrollably as we hit the floor together.

Behind us, Damian stood over the pinned assassin, pressing the barrel of his gun squarely between the man’s eyes.

"Talk," Damian snarled, cocking the hammer. "Or you won't live long enough to regret this."
