Chapter 1 - THE CRUSHED ROSESThe heavy mahogany door swung open without a sound.

Valentina Ricci stood near the marble fireplace in a champagne silk dress, her diamond-encrusted hand still raised in the air. On the floor before her knelt Sophia Bellini, clutching her reddened cheek, tears streaming down her pale face. On the glass coffee table lay an overturned porcelain teacup, brown liquid soaking into an expensive Persian rug.
Valentina turned at the sound of the door, expecting a terrified servant.
Instead, she met the cold, obsidian eyes of Don Lorenzo Moretti.
The temperature in the room plummeted to sub-zero. Lorenzo stood tall in his tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders blocking the hallway light. His face was an unreadable mask of stone, but the vein pulsing rapidly at his temple signaled a deadly, quiet fury.
"Lorenzo!" Valentina gasped, her voice instantly shifting from cruel authority to a sweet, breathy chirp. She dropped her hand and rushed toward him, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. "Darling, you're back so early! I... I was just correcting the staff. Sophia broke my antique teacup and then became incredibly insolent—"
Lorenzo didn't look at Valentina. He didn't even acknowledge her presence as she reached out to touch his arm.
He stepped right past her, walking with heavy, deliberate strides toward the woman kneeling on the floor.
"Get up, Sophia," Lorenzo said. His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that echoed through the vast room.
Sophia trembled, looking up at her boss with wide, terrified eyes. "Mr. Moretti... I... I'm sorry about the cup..."
Lorenzo reached down, took Sophia gently by the elbow, and pulled her to her feet. He looked at her left cheek, where a dark red handprint was already swelling.
"Did she hit you?" Lorenzo asked softly.
Sophia cast a panicked glance at Valentina, who was glaring at her from behind Lorenzo with dark, warning eyes. "I... I tripped, sir."
"Do not lie to me, Sophia," Lorenzo commanded, his hazel eyes locking onto hers. "Outside this room, your six-year-old daughter is crying her eyes out because she thinks her mother is going to disappear. Is that what Valentina told you?"
Valentina’s face turned white as ash. "Lorenzo, you can't possibly listen to the ramblings of a child and a maid! They're trying to manipulate you! I am your fiancée!"
Lorenzo turned slowly to face Valentina.
The look in his eyes was so lethal that Valentina instinctively took two steps back, her heels catching on the rug.
"You are a guest in my home, Valentina," Lorenzo purred, stepping toward her like a predator closing in on its prey. "And five minutes ago, you threatened a child under my protection."
"She overheard a private call!" Valentina shrieked, dropping her innocent act as panic took over. "She was eavesdropping on my family's business!"
"What phone call, Sophia?" Lorenzo asked without breaking eye contact with Valentina.
Sophia swallowed hard, wiping her tears. "She... she was talking to Don Hector of the Chicago Syndicate. She said... she said the shipment arriving at Pier 4 tonight was a trap. She told him your brother wouldn't make it back alive."
Valentina’s breath hitched. "She's lying!"
Lorenzo reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and speed-dialed his head of security.
"Marco," Lorenzo barked into the receiver. "Cancel the Pier 4 intercept immediately. Pull my brother out. Now."
There was a pause, followed by Marco’s panicked voice over the speaker: "Boss! We just arrived at Pier 4! It's an ambush—the Chicago men are already surrounding the warehouse!"
Lorenzo’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles strained. He lowered the phone, staring at the woman he was supposed to marry in three weeks.
"You sold out my family," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dead and terrifyingly calm.
"Lorenzo, please! It's not what you think!" Valentina sobbed, dropping to her knees and reaching for his trousers. "My father forced me! The Chicago family has my brother!"
Lorenzo stepped back, letting her hands hit the bare floor.
"Marco," Lorenzo spoke into his phone, his tone absolute. "Lock down the manor. Put Valentina in the cellar vault. And call my doctor for Sophia."

He looked down at Valentina weeping on the floor.
"Your wedding is canceled," Lorenzo said softly. "And your life in this city is over."
