Chapter 6 - THE EMPRESS OF THE SLUMSThree days later.

The city of Chicago was in a state of high alert.
The news broke across every media outlet:
DON LORENZO MORETTI PRESUMED DEAD AFTER MARCONE MANOR FIRE. DON RICCI ANNOUNCES MERGER OF NEW YORK AND CHICAGO SYNDICATES.
In a private penthouse suite on the top floor of the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Manhattan, the reality was entirely different.
Lorenzo stood before a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking out over the city skyline. His shoulder was bandaged beneath his jacket, but his presence was more formidable than ever.
The heavy doors opened, and Marco walked in, followed by two senior attorneys.
"Boss," Marco reported, bowing his head respectfully. "Don Ricci has called a meeting of the High Commission tonight at the Grand Ballroom. He believes you're dead and plans to formally claim the Moretti territory."
Lorenzo didn't turn around. "And the iron box?"
Sophia stepped out from the adjacent bedroom, wearing a breathtaking emerald-green silk dress that highlighted her soft, gorgeous curves and warm golden skin. In her hands, she carried the iron box, now unlocked.
Inside lay the missing green ledger, along with recorded audio tapes and signed bank transfers proving Don Ricci and Don Hector had orchestrated the murder of Don Vito Moretti—and twenty other syndicate bosses across the country.
Lorenzo turned around, his eyes softening as he looked at Sophia.
He walked over to her, taking the green ledger from her hands, then took her soft, manicured hand in his.
"Tonight, Ricci thinks he is claiming a crown," Lorenzo said, his deep voice filled with a lethal, absolute authority. "He doesn't know that the true power of New York is walking into that room beside me."
Sophia looked at him, her dark eyes flashing with a new, unshakeable confidence.
She was no longer the frightened housekeeper hiding in the servant quarters. She was a woman who had fought a mercenary with an iron box to save her child, a woman who held the fate of the entire American underworld in her hands.
"Let's go take back your kingdom, Lorenzo," Sophia said, her lips curving into a deadly, beautiful smile.

Lorenzo leaned down, pressing a deep, possessive kiss onto her lips that made her toes curl inside her designer heels.
"Not my kingdom, mia cara," Lorenzo purred against her mouth. "Our kingdom."
