Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE LEDGERMidnight.

The estate was quiet except for the rhythmic patter of rain against the roof.
Sophia couldn't sleep. She walked down the dimly lit hallway wearing a simple cotton robe, heading toward the kitchen to fetch a glass of water for Lena.
As she passed the library, she saw a warm amber light glowing beneath the double mahogany doors.
She pushed the door open quietly.
Lorenzo sat behind his massive oak desk, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers, encrypted hard drives, and legal documents. A half-empty glass of dark bourbon sat beside his elbow.
"You should be resting, Sophia," Lorenzo said without looking up from his computer screen.
Sophia smiled faintly, stepping inside. "I could say the same to you, Mr. Moretti."
"Call me Lorenzo. I think we're past 'Mr. Moretti' after tonight."
Sophia walked over to his desk, setting a fresh glass of water down beside his bourbon. "What are you looking for?"
"An explanation," Lorenzo rasped, rubbing his tired eyes. "Valentina’s father, Don Ricci, was my father’s most trusted ally for thirty years. I need to know why he betrayed us to the Chicago family."
Sophia hesitated, looking at a stack of dark green leather ledgers resting on the corner of the desk.
"Those ledgers..." Sophia murmured, pointing to the green books. "They belonged to your father, Don Vito, didn't they?"
Lorenzo nodded, picking one up. "My father kept meticulous records of every transaction, every alliance, every debt. But the last ledger—from the month he died—went missing four years ago."
Sophia took a deep breath, her pulse quickening. "It's not missing."
Lorenzo froze, his eyes snapping to her face. "What did you say?"
"Four years ago, on the night your father passed away," Sophia revealed, her voice trembling slightly, "I was cleaning his private study. He knew he was dying. He called me over and gave me a heavy iron box wrapped in velvet."
Lorenzo stood up so fast his chair rolled back into the bookcase. "What was inside the box, Sophia?!"
"He told me to hide it," Sophia whispered, looking into Lorenzo’s shocked hazel eyes. "He said, 'Give this to Lorenzo only when he is surrounded by snakes, because the man he trusts most is the one who poisoned me.'"
Silence stretched across the library like a taut wire.
Lorenzo stared at her, his chest heaving under his white shirt. "My father didn't die of heart failure... he was poisoned?"
"I hid the box inside the hollow base of the grandfather clock in the east wing," Sophia said, her eyes filled with sympathy and deep emotion. "I was too afraid to give it to you back then... you were surrounded by the Ricci family every day, and I didn't know who was safe."
Lorenzo walked around his desk until he was standing inches from her.
He didn't say a word. He reached out, his large hands gently framing her face, his thumbs brushing against her soft cheekbones.
"You kept his secret for four years," Lorenzo breathed, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You protected my father’s legacy while living under the same roof as his killers."
"I protected it for you, Lorenzo," Sophia whispered, leaning slightly into his warm touch.
Lorenzo leaned down, his forehead resting against hers, his warm breath fanning across her lips.
"You are incredible, Sophia Bellini," he growled softly. "A true warrior."
Before he could close the tiny distance between their lips, a loud alarm shattered the silence of the estate!
