Chapter 4 - Shadows of the PastThe wind howled across the open-air rooftop helipad of the Grand Horizon Hotel, whipping the dark fabric of Arthur’s suit and tearing at the edges of the cashmere coat draped over Elena’s shoulders. Far below, the city lights twinkled like distant, indifferent stars, oblivious to the high-stakes drama unfolding in the freezing midnight air.

True to the ultimatum, Arthur had dismissed the security detail. He and Elena stood alone near the center of the concrete platform, illuminated only by the blinking red aviation warning lights.

“Dad, you shouldn't have brought me up here,” Elena said, her voice strained against the gale-force wind. “It’s a trap.”

“I know it’s a trap, sweetheart,” Arthur replied softly, keeping his eyes fixed on the heavy steel access door leading from the stairwell. “But some doors, once they’re unlocked, you have to walk through yourself.”

“What did the message mean about twenty-five years ago?” Elena pressed, stepping closer to him. “You’ve never talked about that time. Before Whitmore Global was an empire… what happened?”

Before Arthur could answer, the heavy steel door creaked open.

A lone figure stepped out onto the helipad. The silhouette was tall, wrapped in a long, dark trench coat that fluttered violently in the wind. As the figure stepped beneath the harsh glow of the warning lights, the hood fell back, revealing a face that sent a shockwave straight through Arthur’s composure.

It was a man in his late fifties, with sharp, angular features, piercing green eyes, and a cold, twisted smile playing across his lips.

Arthur stared, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles strained against his skin. “Richard… Richard Vance?”

Elena blinked in disbelief. “Vance? Wait… Marcus Vance is your Chief Technology Officer. Is this—”

“Marcus is his son,” Richard interrupted, his voice carrying clearly over the howling wind. He stepped forward, spreading his arms wide as if greeting an old friend. “Good evening, Arthur. Or should I say… good riddance?”

“You died,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “Twenty-five years ago, the federal indictment came down, your shell corporation collapsed, and your plane went down over the Atlantic. The wreckage was found.”

“The wreckage of a decoy plane, filled with purchased corpses and falsified flight logs,” Richard corrected, laughing darkly. “It’s amazing what four billion dollars and a few corrupt federal agents can buy when you need to disappear from a partner who stabbed you in the back.”

“You stole my capital to fund an illegal syndicate!” Arthur fired back, taking a step forward. “I didn't stab you in the back, Richard—I handed you over to the authorities before you dragged my name and my family into the abyss!”

“And in return, you took everything!” Richard roared, his green eyes flashing with decades of unadulterated hatred. “You took my company, my fortune, my life! You left me rotting in the shadows while you built a glittering monument on top of my grave! But empires built on stolen foundations always crumble, Arthur.”

Richard reached into his coat, pulling out a sleek, military-grade tablet. He tapped the screen, and instantly, a red laser dot flickered across Arthur’s chest.

“And tonight,” Richard whispered, a manic grin spreading across his face, “I’m taking it all back.”
