Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushThe morning sun cast a blinding glare across the glass facade of Vance Global Headquarters downtown. The fifty-story monolith stood as a monument to my family's corporate dominance, housing hundreds of executives, lawyers, and administrative staff who bowed to my mother's every command.

At 9:45 AM, the private elevator chimed on the forty-eighth floor, signaling the arrival of the executive suite.

The glass doors slid open. I stepped out first, my stride measured, my posture immaculate in a sharp charcoal suit, crisp white shirt, and silver silk tie. Behind me walked Elena. She wore a stunning emerald maternity dress that contrasted sharply with the sterile, monochromatic tones of the corporate lobby. Her head was held high, her expression calm and unyielding. She didn't look like a victim fleeing a domestic nightmare; she looked like a queen reclaiming her throne.

The receptionists froze. Whispers erupted instantly among the junior analysts and administrative assistants pacing the corridor. Word had already leaked that the golden boy of the Vance family had abandoned his mother's estate under scandalous circumstances, and the entire building was buzzing with speculation.

"Mr. Vance!" stammered Sarah, my mother’s executive secretary, jumping up from her desk. "You... you aren't scheduled to return from Singapore until next week. And Mrs. Vance is currently presiding over the executive board meeting in the primary conference room. You can't just—"

"Watch me, Sarah," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a tone that made her instantly step aside.

I pushed open the heavy double doors of the executive conference room without knocking.

The twenty-seat mahogany table was packed with the company's top executives, legal counsel, and financial auditors. At the head of the table sat my mother, Eleanor Vance, dressed in her signature stark white Chanel suit, her silver hair pulled back into a flawless, severe bun. To her right sat my younger brother, Lucas, smirking as he twirled a gold fountain pen between his fingers.

The moment the doors swung open, the murmurs around the table abruptly died.

My mother didn't flinch. She slowly lowered her gold-rimmed reading glasses, fixing me with a cold, condescending gaze that had cowed board members for decades.

"Daniel," my mother said smoothly, her voice echoing off the acoustic ceiling panels. "How wonderful of you to finally grace us with your presence. I trust you’ve come to your senses after your childish little display yesterday. Hand over your wife's signature authorizations, apologize to your brother for your insolence, and take your seat. We have an audit report to finalize."

Lucas chuckled, leaning back in his leather chair. "Did you bring her a box of tissues too, big bro? Or did you leave her crying on the floor where she belongs?"

The air in the room grew heavy, charged with an electric, suffocating tension. Every eye turned toward me, waiting for me to break, waiting for me to look down in shame.

Instead, I walked forward, pulling out the heavy leather folder containing the financial evidence, and placed it dead center on the polished mahogany table, right in front of my mother's pristine notes.

"I didn't come here to apologize, Mother," I said, my voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "I came here to deliver an eviction notice."

My mother's expression didn't change, though a tiny flicker of irritation crossed her eyes. "Have you lost your mind? You own less than twenty percent of the voting shares in this corporation without my personal trust allocation. You are nothing without this family name."

"That's where you're wrong," I replied, signaling toward the doorway.

The heavy doors opened once more. Two federal marshals, accompanied by an independent senior forensic auditor from the State Securities and Exchange Commission, stepped briskly into the room.

The color drained entirely from Lucas's face. My mother’s pen slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the wooden table.

"What is the meaning of this?" shouted Arthur Pendelton, the senior corporate legal counsel, jumping to his feet. "This is a private corporate meeting! You cannot bring outsiders into—"

"Quiet, Arthur," the federal auditor commanded, flashing his badge and stepping forward with a thick sheaf of printed documents. "My name is Special Agent Miller, SEC Financial Crimes Division. We have warrants to seize all digital servers, hard drives, and physical records belonging to Vance Global Industries, effective immediately."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Executives shouted over one another, papers flew, and Lucas scrambled backward in his chair, knocking it over onto the carpet.

"This is an outrage!" my mother shrieked, her iron facade finally cracking as she slammed her palms against the table, glaring at me with unadulterated venom. "You destroyed your own blood! You betrayed your family for a gold-digging whore!"

May you like

I stepped in front of Elena, shielding her from my mother's hateful glare, and leaned down so that my face was inches from my mother's wide, trembling eyes.

"She is my wife. She is the mother of my child," I whispered coldly. "And you, Mother... your reign is officially over."
