Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesWithin forty-eight hours of the boardroom raid, the invincible illusion of the Vance dynasty dissolved into ash.

Federal agents dismantled Vance Global’s internal server networks, unearthing a staggering web of systemic financial fraud, tax evasion, and illicit offshore wire transfers totaling over forty-two million dollars over the past decade. The primary architect of the scheme was officially identified not as a rogue employee, but as Eleanor Vance, operating through a labyrinth of dummy corporations designed to siphon wealth away from public shareholders and minority partners.
The media frenzy was immediate and relentless. Financial news networks plastered my mother’s severe, aristocratic face across cable television screens nationwide, branding her as the mastermind behind one of the most brazen corporate corruption scandals of the decade. Stock prices for Vance Global plummeted by seventy-four percent in a single trading session, triggering emergency bankruptcy protection filings.
Inside our secure penthouse overlooking the harbor, the world outside felt a million miles away.
Elena sat by the window, sipping warm herbal tea as she watched the sunset paint the sky in brilliant shades of violet and gold. The dark shadows of trauma and fear that had haunted her eyes since our departure were steadily fading, replaced by a radiant, peaceful glow as our unborn son continued to grow strong and active.
"They froze all of her personal accounts this morning," I said quietly, walking over and placing a warm mug of tea on the small side table beside her chair. "The courts seized her estates, her vehicles, her private art collection, and every single trust fund she controlled."
Elena looked up at me, her expression a mix of awe and profound relief. "And Lucas?"
"Lucas tried to flee the country using a secondary passport tied to one of the shell companies," I replied with a faint smile. "Federal airport security detained him at the private aviation terminal before his flight to the Cayman Islands could take off. He’s currently sitting in a holding cell downtown, facing multiple felony counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy."
Elena reached out, taking my hand and pressing her palm gently against my cheek. "You risked everything you built to protect us, Daniel. You walked away from a multi-billion-dollar empire without hesitation."
"I walked away from a gilded cage," I corrected her, kissing her knuckles softly. "Everything I ever truly valued in this life is sitting right here in this room. Vance Global was built on lies, manipulation, and blood. What we are building starts with truth."
Suddenly, the intercom buzzer at the private elevator foyer chimed softly.
I frowned. We hadn't given our address to anyone outside of our trusted medical team and legal counsel.
"Stay here," I instructed Elena gently, rising from the sofa and walking down the short private hallway toward the foyer.
I checked the security monitor by the door.
Standing on the private landing outside our penthouse doors, looking utterly defeated, disheveled, and stripped of her immaculate dignity, was my mother. Her silver hair was slightly undone, her expensive Chanel suit wrinkled, and her eyes hollow and sunken. There were no bodyguards, no lawyers, no servants to open doors for her.
She stood entirely alone.
I pressed the master override button and unlocked the heavy door, pulling it open just wide enough to block her path.

My mother stared at me, her lips trembling slightly before she managed to summon a pathetic vestige of her former pride.
"Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are you really going to let your own flesh and blood rot in a federal holding cell? Are you going to watch your mother face prison time without lifting a finger to help?"
