Chapter 10 - The Ultimate CheckmateTime seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl.

Victor’s thumb began to press down against the red plastic button of the detonator. The tiny LED light shifted from a slow blink to a rapid, high-pitched emergency flash.

In that fraction of a second, Arthur didn't hesitate.

Years of elite corporate survival instincts—honed through decades of cutthroat negotiations and physical danger—ignited within him. Instead of begging, instead of freezing, Arthur lunged forward with explosive, cat-like speed.

He didn't run toward Victor. He dove sideways, grabbing the heavy silver wine cooler off the serving cart and hurling it like a professional quarterback directly at Victor’s outstretched hand.

CLANG!

The heavy silver vessel smashed squarely into Victor’s wrist with brutal force. The detonator flew out of his hand, spinning through the air before clattering across the stone patio and tumbling into the dark swimming pool beyond.

"Ahhh!" Victor screamed, clutching his bruised wrist as he stumbled backward.

Before Victor could recover his balance, Arthur was already on him. He slammed his fist directly into Victor’s jaw with the full weight of his accumulated rage and desperation. Victor crashed hard onto the flagstone patio, sliding across the stone and hitting his head against the base of the marble fountain, knocking him instantly unconscious.

Arthur didn't waste a single millisecond celebrating. He sprinted over to Chloe, dropping to his knees and ripping the electrical tape off her mouth before pulling out his pocket knife to slash through the steel cables binding her to the chair.

"Dad!" Chloe sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck as the restraints fell away. "You saved me—you saved us!"

"I've got you, baby. We're getting out of here right now," Arthur panted, pulling her up to her feet.

Suddenly, the red digital display on the underground control panel near the wall let out a sharp, continuous warning beep.

WARNING: SYSTEM PURGE OVERRIDE FAILED. MANUAL SHUTDOWN REQUIRED.

Arthur grabbed Chloe’s hand, sprinting away from the courtyard just as a deafening roar echoed from beneath the stone patio.

BOOM.

A contained, localized blast of smoke and dust erupted from the subterranean utility hatch, sending sparks flying into the night sky. But because of Victor’s sabotaged wiring failing to chain-link the main estate, the mansion itself remained completely untouched, standing tall and majestic against the starlit sky.

Ten minutes later, the red-and-blue flashing lights of a massive police and federal tactical convoy flooded the driveway once again. Paramedics rushed onto the patio, placing the unconscious Victor Vance into handcuffs before strapping him onto a stretcher for immediate transport to a secure prison medical facility.

Harrison Vance walked up to Arthur, who was standing by the edge of the lawn with his arm wrapped tightly around Chloe’s shoulders, watching the authorities clean up the chaotic scene.

"Paramedics checked her out, Arthur. She’s going to be completely fine—just shaken up," Harrison reported, breathing a sigh of relief. "And the federal agents recovered the master override codes from Victor's pocket. The corporate assets are 100 percent secure. Vanguard Global Holdings has been permanently dissolved by order of the federal court."

Arthur looked down at his daughter, who rested her head against his shoulder, safe, protected, and finally free from the ghosts of the past.

The billionaire gently kissed the top of her head, knowing that no amount of wealth in the world could ever replace what truly mattered.

"It's over, sweetheart," Arthur whispered into the quiet night air as the stars shone brightly above their home. "Dad is here. And no one will ever hurt us again."
