Chapter 5 - The Trap at the VillaThe sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the sprawling Sterling estate into deep, ominous shadows. The iron security gates stood open—a chilling anomaly in a fortress that was normally locked down tighter than a federal vault.

Arthur’s Maybach glided smoothly up the long gravel driveway, its headlights cutting through the darkness. Inside the car, Arthur gripped his phone, frantically dialing Chloe’s private number for the fourth time in ten minutes.
“The subscriber you have dialed is currently unavailable or outside the coverage area.”
A wave of absolute nausea washed over Arthur. He slammed his fist against the leather dashboard. "Damn it! Pick up, Chloe!"
He ordered the driver to floor it. The Maybach surged forward, screeching to a halt right in front of the grand double doors of the mansion.
Arthur threw the door open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop. He sprinted up the stone steps, throwing his weight against the front doors. They swung open effortlessly.
Too effortlessly.
The grand foyer was dark. The glittering crystal chandelier overhead was turned off, casting the cavernous entrance hall in eerie, shifting shadows.
"Chloe?!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing frantically through the empty halls. "Chloe, where are you?!"
No answer. Only the rhythmic, haunting drip of water somewhere in the distance.
Arthur drew his phone, turning on the flashlight beam, sweeping it across the marble floor where Chloe had once been forced to scrub. To his horror, the marble was stained once again—not with dirt, but with a dark, viscous trail of fresh red liquid leading toward the rear drawing room.
Heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer, Arthur rushed toward the drawing room, his instincts screaming that this was a trap.
He kicked the heavy double doors open.
The scene inside made his blood instantly freeze in his veins.
Seated comfortably in Arthur’s own leather armchair by the grand fireplace was Julian Vance. He was swirling a glass of Arthur’s most expensive 1982 vintage Scotch, looking completely at home. Standing directly behind him with a smug, triumphant grin was Marcus.
And tied securely to a wooden dining chair in the center of the room, with a thick strip of duct tape gagging her mouth and tears streaming down her pale face, was Chloe.
"Welcome home, Arthur," Julian said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his Scotch. He set the glass down on the side table and stood up, buttoning his jacket with deliberate slowness. "We've been expecting you."
Arthur took a threatening step forward, his hands curling into white-knuckled fists. "Let her go, Julian. If you lay a single finger on my daughter, I swear to God I will bury you so deep—"
"Save the corporate tough-guy routine, Arthur," Julian interrupted, his voice suddenly dropping its polite veneer, turning sharp and venomous. "Twenty years ago, your precious 'tough-guy routine' destroyed my father. You cut a deal with the feds, threw Victor Vance under the bus, and watched him rot in a federal penitentiary while you walked away a billionaire."
"Your father was a crook who was going to sink us both!" Arthur snarled, his eyes locked on Chloe, who was shaking violently and making muffled whimpering sounds behind her gag.
"My father trusted you!" Julian shouted back, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "And you betrayed him for a seat at the big boys' table! My family lost everything—our home, our dignity, our name. And now... it’s time to return the favor."
Marcus stepped forward, grinning like a hyena. "Surprised to see me, old man? Did you really think throwing me out on the street would stop the inevitable? Mom was just a distraction. I’ve been working with Julian for six months, feeding him every single vulnerability in your corporate armor."
"You sold out your own family for revenge?" Arthur glared at Marcus with utter disgust.
"Family?" Marcus laughed harshly. "You never considered me family! I was just a prop to make you look like a respectable philanthropist! But tonight... tonight we take it all. The mansion, the corporation, the billions—everything."
Julian pulled a thick legal document out of his breast pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table right in front of Arthur.
"Sign over 51 percent of your voting shares to Vanguard Global Holdings right now," Julian demanded, pulling a small, sleek black pistol from his jacket holster and pointing it casually in Chloe’s direction. "Or watch your precious daughter pay the ultimate price for your sins."
Arthur looked at the gun. Then he looked at Chloe, whose eyes were wide with sheer, unadulterated terror as she shook her head frantically, begging him with her gaze not to do it.
The billionaire took a deep, steadying breath. In the high-stakes game of corporate warfare, he had always known how to bluff. But this wasn't a boardroom. This was his daughter’s life.
"You think you've won," Arthur whispered softly, a dangerous, unexpected smile slowly spreading across his lips.

Julian frowned, lowering the gun slightly in confusion. "What did you say?"
"I said," Arthur raised his voice, his eyes flashing with lethal confidence, "you forgot the most important rule of dealing with a shark, Julian: Never corner one in its own waters."
