Chapter 2 - The Roots of the RotThe master wing of the Sterling estate was normally a sanctuary of muted wealth and quiet luxury, but tonight it felt like a war room.

Arthur gently placed Chloe on the edge of the king-sized velvet bed, wrapping her in a thick cashmere throw. He called for the private family physician immediately, pacing the length of the expansive bedroom like a caged panther while waiting for the doctor to arrive.

Chloe sat shivering, clutching a mug of warm chamomile tea between her palms. The hot liquid did little to thaw the deep, bone-chilling trauma of the past ninety days.

"Dad, you shouldn't have hit her," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible. "Mom... she’s not alone in this. There’s... there’s someone else."

Arthur stopped dead in his tracks. He turned sharply, his brow furrowed in fierce concentration. "What do you mean? Who else?"

Before Chloe could answer, the heavy oak door creaked open, and step-brother Marcus walked into the room. Marcus, twenty-four, sleek, and dressed in a tailored Tom Ford suit, strolled in with an air of casual arrogance that usually accompanied a board meeting. He was Elena’s son from a previous marriage—a lazy, entitled parasite whom Arthur had generously funded through Wharton Business School, placing him as a senior vice president in the Sterling Corporation.

"What is all the shouting about?" Marcus sighed, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "Mom is downstairs crying hysterically, saying you lost your mind, Arthur. Honestly, throwing a tantrum like a—"

Marcus stopped mid-sentence as he took in the scene. He saw Chloe in her filthy maid’s uniform, her swollen eyes, and most importantly, he saw the dark, murderous glare fixed upon him by Arthur.

"Did you know?" Arthur asked. His voice was terrifyingly calm.

Marcus swallowed hard, taking an involuntary step back toward the door. "Know... know what? Look, Dad, I've been working late on the Singapore acquisition—"

"Did you know your mother turned your stepsister into an unpaid domestic servant?" Arthur stepped forward, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. He grabbed Marcus by the lapels of his expensive suit, slamming him hard against the heavy oak door with a loud thud that rattled the picture frames on the wall.

"Dad! Let go of me! You're choking me!" Marcus gasped, his hands clawing uselessly at Arthur's iron grip.

"You lived under this roof," Arthur hissed, his face inches from Marcus’s sweating brow. "You watched her scrub these floors. You watched her serve you dinner while you laughed with your mother. And you said nothing. You participated."

"It was... it was her idea!" Marcus blurted out, panic entirely overriding his usual smug facade. "Mom said Chloe needed to be broken down! She said Chloe was getting too arrogant about inheriting the primary trust fund! Mom wanted to make sure everything went to me—to us!"

The words hung in the air like poison gas.

Chloe gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "The primary trust fund... Mom, you planned this to steal my inheritance?"

Arthur slowly released Marcus, letting the young man slide down the door until he was awkwardly crouched on the carpet, gasping for air and straightening his crumpled tie with trembling hands.

Arthur walked over to the mahogany executive desk in the corner of the bedroom. He pulled open the top drawer, grabbed his secure satellite phone, and punched in a direct number without breaking eye contact with Marcus.

"Legal department," Arthur ordered when the line connected. This was his chief corporate counsel, Harrison Vance, a shark who handled the billionaire's most ruthless litigations.

"Sir? It's past midnight. Is everything alright?" Vance asked, sounding instantly alert.

"Harrison, I want an immediate audit of every single account, asset, and subsidiary managed by Elena Sterling and Marcus Vance over the last five years," Arthur commanded, his voice cold and absolute. "Freeze all of Marcus's corporate credit cards, revoke his security clearance to the Sterling Tower, and draft termination papers for gross financial malfeasance and conspiracy to commit fraud."

"Dad, you can't do that!" Marcus screamed, scrambling to his feet. "You'll ruin me! I'm your son—well, stepson! You signed papers!"

"I signed nothing that protects a thief," Arthur said coldly into the phone. "And Harrison? Prepare a high-conflict divorce filing for Elena. Grounds: severe psychological abuse, conspiracy, and embezzlement. I want her stripped of every single asset tied to my name before the sun comes up."

"Consider it done, Mr. Sterling," Vance replied crisply before the line went dead.

Arthur dropped the phone onto the desk. He turned back to face Marcus, who looked physically ill, the color entirely drained from his face.

"Get out of my sight," Arthur whispered, pointing toward the door. "If you are still in this house when the doctor arrives, I won't just fire you. I will personally ensure you spend the next ten years of your life in a federal penitentiary."

Marcus didn't need to be told twice. He bolted out of the room, his expensive shoes squeaking against the hardwood hallway as he fled for his life.

Chloe burst into quiet, shuddering tears once more, but this time, Arthur was there. He knelt beside her bed, pulling her into his arms and holding her tight against his chest.

"It's over, baby," Arthur whispered fiercely into her hair. "I'm back. And I am going to burn their entire world to the ground."
