Chapter 10 - Dawn and a New BeginningThe sun rose over the eastern harbor, burning away the remnants of the storm and casting a brilliant, golden glow across the city skyline.

At Pine Street Animal Care, the front doors were wide open. A line of local pet owners stood outside, waiting for their turn, children laughing as Ajax and the German Shepherd chased each other playfully in the morning sunlight.
Inside, Elena was organizing her surgical trays when the front bell chimed.
She looked up. Alexander stood there. He was wearing a fresh dark coat, clean-shaven, with no blood on his hands, no weapons at his side. Just a faint, genuine smile—the first real smile she had ever seen on his face.
He walked past the counter, stopped right in front of her, and pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket.
"What's this?" Elena asked, raising an eyebrow, though her heart was hammering a mile a minute.
"My final investment," Alexander said smoothly, opening the box to reveal a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a small, brilliant diamond flanked by two tiny, perfectly carved silver dog tags. "A permanent contract. No escape clauses. You save strays, and I make sure no one ever touches your clinic again."
Elena stared at the ring, then looked up into his eyes—eyes that had once terrified her, but now felt like home.
"And what if I say no?" she teased softly, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face.

Alexander stepped closer, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. "Then I'll just have to get bitten by another stray dog every single night until you say yes."
Elena laughed, the sound bright and free, echoing through the busy clinic as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him in broad daylight, right in front of the whole world.
