Chapter 8 - The Wolf in the SanctuaryFor the next three days, Pine Street Animal Care underwent the strangest transformation in criminal history.

Men in expensive Brioni suits patrolled the perimeter carrying assault rifles, while inside, Alexander Moretti sat rolling bandages, feeding recovering kittens with a tiny eyedropper, and watching Elena work with a gaze of unblinking fascination.

At first, Elena expected him to bark orders or take phone calls about gunrunning and drug shipments every two seconds. But true to his word, when he was in the clinic, his entire world narrowed down to the sterile rooms, the animals, and her.

On the third evening, as a heavy rain began to patter against the newly repaired windows, Elena was sitting on the small cot in her back room, rubbing her tired shoulders. The door opened quietly, and Alexander stepped in, holding a steaming mug of tea.

He handed it to her, sitting down beside her on the narrow cot, making the old frame creak.

"The courier sent word," Alexander said softly, staring down at his hands. "Vance is cornered at the old dry docks by the harbor. My men move in at midnight."

Elena looked at him, her heart doing a strange, painful flip. "Are you going?"

"Yes," he replied simply. "Some debts have to be paid in person."

"Be careful," the words slipped out of her mouth before she could stop them. She hadn't meant to say them, but looking at the jagged scar over his eye and the quiet weight he carried, she couldn't help it.

Alexander turned his head, his icy eyes softening into something deep, dark, and warm. He reached out, his warm fingers gently wrapping around her jaw, tilting her face up toward his.

"If I don't come back," Alexander whispered, his voice thick with emotion, "everything I own—every dollar, every dock, every building—is legally transferred to Pine Street Animal Care. You will never have to worry about rent, supplies, or stray animals again."

"Don't talk like that," Elena whispered back, her chest tightening painfully. "Don't you dare give me a legacy built on your grave."

"Then give me a reason to come back," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips.

When Alexander kissed her, it wasn't gentle. It was desperate, hungry, and heavy with all the unsaid words, the blood, the rain, and the shadows that bound them together. Elena gasped softly against his mouth, her hands instinctively grabbing the lapels of his shirt, pulling him closer as the storm outside raged on.
