Chapter 7 - The Underground AllianceDawn broke over Pine Street, painting the shattered glass of the clinic in hues of bruised purple and gold.

The bodies of Vance’s hitmen had been cleared away with terrifying, military-grade efficiency. The clinic windows were temporarily boarded up with heavy plywood, and two of Alexander’s elite guards stood silently outside as permanent sentinels.

Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The wounded courier had been stabilized and airlifted to a private, secure medical facility, while the German Shepherd rested comfortably beside Ajax in the extended recovery ward.

Elena sat at her desk, drinking a cup of black coffee that Alexander had poured for her. He sat across from her on the edge of the examination table, casually cleaning a small pocket knife with a lint-free cloth.

"Vance is going to retaliate," Elena said flatly, her voice steady now. The fear had crystallized into something sharper, something strategic. "He knows you care about this clinic now. It's your Achilles' heel."

"Vance won't be a problem much longer," Alexander replied without looking up from his knife. "His supply lines are cut. His safehouses have been compromised. By tonight, his own captains will turn on him."

"You're going to war."

"I'm finishing one," he corrected, finally looking up. His gaze was intense, burning into hers. "Which brings us to you, Elena. You can't stay here anymore. Pine Street is no longer safe. I have an estate outside the city limits—heavy security, private veterinary facilities, complete isolation. Pack your things. You're moving."

Elena slammed her coffee cup down onto the desk, the porcelain clattering loudly. "Moving? Like your prisoner? Like some trophy you're locking away in a tower?"

"Like a woman whose life I am protecting because I refuse to bury you!" Alexander snapped back, standing up with a sudden, overwhelming surge of power that made the small room feel suffocating.

Elena stood up to meet him toe-to-toe, refusing to shrink back. "I am a doctor! I built this clinic with my own hands. I save animals who have nowhere else to go! I am not a piece of cargo you can just relocate when your enemies get too close!"

Silence stretched between them, heavy and crackling with electricity. For three long seconds, they glared at each other—the mafia king accustomed to absolute obedience, and the fierce veterinarian accustomed to fighting for survival against all odds.

Then, slowly, a slow, grudging smile broke across Alexander’s face. He stepped closer, so close she could feel the heat radiating from his body.

"God, you're stubborn," he whispered, his hand rising to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Fine. You stay here. But I am doubling the guard, and I am moving in with you."

Elena's eyes widened. "You're moving where?"

"Right here," Alexander said calmly. "Until Victor Vance draws his last breath, my bed is wherever you are."
