Chapter 3 - The Vanguard CollapseMarcus Vance stepped further into the room, his polished oxfords clicking against the linoleum. He didn’t even glance at Vanessa in her ruined wedding gown; his entire focus was fixed on Adrian, who looked as though he had just been hit by a freight train.

“What is the meaning of this, Vance?” Adrian spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic. “You’re my corporate counsel! You’re on retainer with Carter Holdings!”

“Correction, Mr. Carter,” Marcus replied with a cool, professional smile, opening his leather briefcase and extracting a crisp document. “I was on retainer with Carter Holdings until thirty minutes ago. Section 4 of Mrs. Emma Carter’s amended trust grants her absolute controlling proxy over all pre-nuptial corporate restructuring in the event of an heir being born within the statutory grace period.”

Marcus turned the paper toward Adrian, pointing a manicured finger at the bottom.

“As of ten minutes ago, your signature on the Vanguard Group merger documents has been legally revoked by the primary stakeholder—your ex-wife. Furthermore, because you attempted to conceal the existence of a legitimate corporate heir during the multi-billion-dollar merger negotiations, the SEC has been notified of securities fraud.”

Vanessa screamed, a high-pitched, hysterical sound that echoed off the hospital walls. “Fraud?! Are you insane?! We are getting married today! This is a private family dispute! You can’t ruin a multi-billion-dollar merger over a baby!”

“It’s not a dispute, Ms. Vance,” Marcus said without missing a beat, turning his gaze to her with undisguised contempt. “And it’s certainly not private anymore. Word travels fast when federal investigators freeze corporate accounts. In fact, if you check your phone right now, you might notice that your wedding reception guests aren't wondering where you are anymore. They’re too busy watching the news alert about Carter Holdings’ stock dropping thirty percent in after-hours trading.”

Vanessa’s hand flew to her evening bag. Her fingers fumbled frantically with the zipper until her smartphone dropped onto the floor with a loud clatter. She didn’t bother picking it up. The screen lit up against the tiles, displaying a live push notification from Bloomberg: CARTER HOLDINGS TRADING HALTED AMID SUDDEN ASSET FREEZE AND FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

“No,” Vanessa whispered, falling to her knees beside her dropped phone, her expensive wedding dress soaking up the spilled flower water on the floor. “No, no, no... Adrian, you said we were safe! You said she had nothing left!”

Adrian ignored her entirely. He stared at me, the last vestiges of his arrogance completely burned away, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered man.

“Emma,” he pleaded, taking a desperate step forward, his hands outstretched. “Emma, please. We can fix this. We can go back to the penthouse. We can share the custody, the company, everything. Just call off your lawyer. Tell them it’s a misunderstanding. We were married for five years! Have some heart!”

I looked down at my daughter. She had curled one tiny, perfect hand around my thumb, her grip surprisingly strong.

“Heart?” I repeated softly, raising my eyes to meet his. “Adrian, when I stood in family court six months ago, begging you to let me keep a fraction of what I helped you build, you told the judge I was unstable. You laughed while your lawyers stripped me of my home, my dignity, and my peace of mind. You brought your mistress into our bed, and you expected me to crawl away quietly into the dark.”

I paused, letting the cold weight of my words settle over the room.

“I didn't have a heart left to give you, Adrian. You and Vanessa made sure of that. But my daughter? She has my entire heart. And I will burn Carter Holdings to ash before I ever let either of you touch her.”
