Chapter 7 - The Boardroom TakeoverThe mahogany boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Carter Holdings smelled of aged leather, polished brass, and old money. But the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Seated around the massive oval table were the remaining board members—men and women who had spent the last forty-eight hours watching their stock value plummet, their names dragged through the mud, and their retirement portfolios hang in the balance.

The double doors swung open, and I walked in.

I wasn't wearing the muted, understated pastel dresses Adrian used to pick out for me to ensure I blended into the background. I wore a sharp, tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon, and my head held high. Behind me walked Marcus Vance carrying my briefcase, while my mother stayed home in Brooklyn with my daughter, keeping her safe and sound.

I didn't take a seat at the side or the foot of the table. I walked straight to the head of the table—the massive leather chair that had belonged to Adrian—and sat down.

For a moment, absolute silence hung over the room. No one moved. No one spoke.

“Good morning, everyone,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air with absolute authority.

Arthur Pendelton, the senior-most board member, cleared his throat nervously, shifting in his seat. “Mrs. Carter... while we acknowledge the emergency proxy execution that placed you in this interim seat, many of us have questions regarding the stability of the company under... unconventional leadership.”

I rested my hands flat on the mahogany table, leaning forward slightly.

“Unconventional, Arthur?” I raised an eyebrow. “Is that what you call a company whose former CEO was too busy planning a fraudulent wedding with a corporate embezzler to notice that his entire core asset structure was legally transferred to his ex-wife?”

Arthur flushed red, dropping his gaze to the polished wood.

“Let’s dispense with the pleasantries,” I continued, opening my portfolio and sliding copies of a restructuring proposal across the table. “As of this morning, I have initiated a complete internal audit of every department, every subsidiary, and every overseas account associated with Adrian Carter and Vanessa Vance. Every dollar stolen, misallocated, or wasted on luxury hush-money will be clawed back into corporate reserves.”

“And the Vanguard merger?” a female director asked anxiously. “If that deal falls through, the stock will never recover.”

“The Vanguard deal isn't dead,” I replied smoothly. “It’s being renegotiated on our terms. I spoke with their CEO an hour before I walked into this building. They are willing to proceed—provided Carter Holdings drops the Carter name entirely and rebrands under a new corporate charter.”

Gasps rippled around the table.

“Drop the Carter name?” Arthur stammered. “That name has stood on Wall Street for forty years!”

“And for forty years, it has been propped up by ego, nepotism, and financial fraud,” I said, my voice hardening like steel. “The Carter name is radioactive. Effective immediately, the company will be renamed Aura Holdings—derived from a fresh start, a clean balance sheet, and absolute accountability.”

I picked up my silver pen and tapped it once against the table.

“You have two choices. You can vote unanimously to ratify this restructuring charter, or you can resign right now and join Adrian in facing federal securities investigations. The choice is yours. You have sixty seconds.”

No one reached for a resignation letter. Within twenty seconds, every hand around the table was raised in unanimous approval.
