Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Titan“This is a mistake!” Adrian shouted, thrashing wildly as the officer gripped his arm and forced him toward the door. The pristine white fabric of his custom tuxedo bunched awkwardly against his shoulders. “Do you know who I am?! I am the CEO of Carter Holdings! Call my legal team! This is corporate harassment!”

“Your legal team is currently shredding their retainer agreements downstairs, Mr. Carter,” Marcus Vance remarked coolly, adjusting his cuffs as he watched the billionaire get hauled out of the room.

Vanessa scrambled backward against the wall, pulling her ruined bridal train around her legs like a shield, terrified that the police might look her way next. But the officers didn't even glance at her. To them, she wasn't a society bride anymore; she was merely collateral damage in a much larger corporate execution.

As Adrian was dragged past my hospital bed, he stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes locking onto mine. There was no anger left in them—only a terrifying, hollow realization of absolute defeat.

“Emma...” he whispered, his voice trembling. “Please.”

I didn't look away, nor did I soften. I simply adjusted the pink blanket over my sleeping daughter and spoke seven words that would haunt him for the rest of his life:

“Enjoy the wedding night, Adrian.”

The heavy door clicked shut, leaving behind an echoing silence that felt heavier than the storm raging outside the Brooklyn hospital windows.

Vanessa remained huddled on the floor, her chest heaving as silent, bitter tears carved tracks through her foundation. The diamonds around her throat glittered mockingly under the fluorescent lights—worth a small fortune, yet completely useless against the avalanche of lawsuits and financial ruin heading her way.

“You think you’ve won,” Vanessa spat venomously, her voice shaking as she glared up at me from the linoleum. “You think a baby and a few hidden clauses make you untouchable? Adrian will find a way out. He always does. Men like him don't go to prison.”

“Men like him used to rely on wives who stayed silent to protect their image,” I replied evenly, my voice devoid of anger, filled only with a terrifying, absolute calm. “I am not that woman anymore, Vanessa. And as for you? You might want to check your email before you stand up.”

Vanessa frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion. She reached out with a trembling hand, snatched her phone from the floor, and unlocked the screen.

Her face drained of what little color remained.

“My... my personal accounts...” she whispered, her voice dropping to a horrified screech. “They’re frozen! Every cent my parents put in my trust... it’s locked under a federal injunction!”

“Section 12 of the corporate fraud recovery act,” Marcus Vance explained helpfully, stepping toward the door with his briefcase. “When an employee aids a CEO in concealing corporate assets using company-funded travel and falsified expense reports—such as those lovely trips to Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles—they are classified as an active co-conspirator. Every gift, every dress, every dollar Adrian spent on you comes under federal audit.”

Vanessa let out a primal scream of absolute rage and despair, hurling her phone against the hospital wall where it shattered into a dozen plastic pieces. She curled into a ball on the floor, weeping hysterically into her ruined tulle dress, completely broken.

Marcus turned to me, offering a polite, respectful nod. “I’ll handle the press conference outside, Mrs. Carter. By morning, the board will formally vote to install you as interim chairwoman pending the emergency restructuring.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said softly. “Make sure the media gets the full statement about the asset redirection.”

“Consider it done.”
