Chapter 1 - THE HOTEL ROOM DOORBELLThe heavy oak door of Suite 1402 at the Grand Manhattan Resort echoed with three loud, deliberate knocks.

Inside, the suite smelled of expensive lavender oil, melted candle wax, and leftover champagne. Silk robes were tossed over velvet chairs, and luxury shopping bags from Fifth Avenue littered the plush carpet.

Rachel was lounging on the king-sized bed, scrolling through her phone, admiring the photos she had posted on Instagram just hours earlier: “New Year, New Energy. Blessed with family in luxury ✨ #NewBeginnings #SelfCare.”

Beside her, Mark was snoring softly, an unopened bottle of vintage wine sitting on the nightstand. In the adjoining room, their mother, Eleanor, was sitting at a vanity mirror, applying a thick layer of night cream while admiring a newly purchased gold bracelet that had cost $4,200—money that was supposed to pay for Noah’s medical visits and specialized infant formula.

The knocking came again. Sharper this time.

“Mark, go get that,” Eleanor called out from the vanity, her voice dripping with irritation. “It’s probably room service with the midnight truffles. Tell them they took too long.”

Mark groaned, throwing off the duvet, and slouched toward the door in his monogrammed bathrobe. He unlocked the latch and pulled the door open, ready to bark at a hotel staff member.

He froze.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway were two uniformed NYPD officers accompanied by two suits from the Major Fraud and Child Exploitation Unit. Behind them stood an investigator holding a tablet.

“Mark Henderson?” the lead officer asked, his voice cold and devoid of any holiday cheer.

“Uh… yeah? What’s going on? Is this a joke?” Mark stammered, pulling his robe tighter.

Eleanor stepped into the foyer, holding a glass of sparkling water. “Excuse me! What is the meaning of this intrusion? We are paying seven hundred dollars a night for this suite! You can’t just—”

“Eleanor Vance?” the female officer interrupted, stepping into the suite without asking for permission. “And Rachel Vance?”

Rachel ran out of the bedroom, her eyes wide with sudden panic. “What is happening?! Who called you?”

“We have a warrant for the immediate arrest of Eleanor Vance, Rachel Vance, and Mark Henderson,” the lead officer announced, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs. “You are being placed under arrest for Felony Child Abandonment, Criminal Negligence, Conspiracy to Commit Fraud, and Grand Larceny.”

The room went dead silent. The faint sound of New Year’s fireworks crackled outside the high-rise window, but inside, the air suddenly turned ice cold.

“Grand Larceny?! Child abandonment?!” Eleanor shrieked, her face turning crimson under her expensive face cream. “Have you lost your minds?! My son is overseas in Germany! I am taking care of his children!”

“Your son returned to Brooklyn six hours ago, Mrs. Vance,” the female officer said coldly, grabbing Eleanor’s wrists and pulling them behind her back. “He found his 14-year-old son holding a freezing, dehydrated newborn in a 52-degree apartment with no food, no formula, and no heat. The baby is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.”

Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“David… David is back?” Rachel gasped, her face draining of all color. She backed away toward the balcony, looking frantically at her phone. “No, no, no, he wasn't supposed to be home until next week! He was stuck in Stuttgart!”

“Click.”

The steel cuffs locked onto Rachel’s wrists.

“You have the right to remain silent,” the officer began reading the Miranda rights as Mark started crying, begging the officers not to ruin his career.

As they were dragged down the opulent carpeted hallway in front of shocked hotel guests, Eleanor caught sight of her reflection in the elevator mirror. Her hair was disheveled, her silk robe was pulled open, and her gold bracelet gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights—a golden paper trail that was about to send her straight to a jail cell.
