Chapter 4 - THE BETRAYAL OF MARKIn the holding cells of the Kings County Criminal Court, the strain of incarceration was already breaking the conspirators apart.

Mark, Rachel’s fiancé, was a junior corporate attorney who had spent years building a pristine reputation in New York legal circles. Now, sitting in a orange jumpsuit with his hands cuffed to his waist chain, he was unraveling fast.

When his court-appointed public defender sat down across from him behind the glass divider, Mark didn't even ask about bail.

“I need a deal,” Mark blurted out, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles hanging beneath them. “I’ll give you everything. I’ll testify against Eleanor and Rachel. Just keep me out of state prison!”

“Mr. Henderson, your state charges carry up to fifteen years for child endangerment and grand theft,” the public defender warned. “And the federal prosecutor is looking at wire fraud.”

“It wasn’t my idea!” Mark yelled, pressing his palms against the plexiglass. “I swear to God, it was Eleanor’s idea! She told me David was a millionaire who didn't care about his kids! She said David left excess funds for us to spend on the family! She showed me forged texts from David saying we could take the luxury suite for the holidays!”

“Do you have proof that Eleanor forged those texts?”

Mark leaned closer to the glass, his breath fogging up the panel. “I have better than that. I have recorded audio.”

The lawyer raised an eyebrow. “Audio?”

“Rachel and Eleanor didn’t trust me completely, so whenever they discussed how they manipulated David’s accounts, I secretly recorded our dinner conversations on my phone,” Mark confessed, desperate to save his own skin. “I have recordings of Eleanor admitting she turned off the apartment’s smart thermostat remotely from her phone so the electric bill would be lower while they were staying at the hotel!”

The attorney gasped slightly. “She turned off the heat remotely?”

“Yes! She said Ethan was smart enough to figure out how to turn it back on manually, but she didn’t want the power bill going up while David was away!” Mark stammered, sweating profusely. “And I have audio of Rachel admitting she took the baby’s emergency medical folder and threw it in the trash so David couldn’t easily prove Noah’s birth details to the insurance company!”

Mark wiped his nose on his sleeve. “I have it all saved on a cloud drive. I’ll give the prosecutor the password right now. Just guarantee me immunity! Don’t send me to jail with them!”

What Mark didn’t know was that in the adjacent visitation room, Rachel was sitting with her own lawyer, listening through an open security feed arranged by the prosecutor’s office.

When Rachel heard Mark—the man she was supposed to marry in six months—offering up all the audio files to turn her and her mother in, she let out a blood-curdling scream and threw her metal chair against the wall.

The alliance had completely collapsed.
