Chapter 2 - BIRTH OF A WITNESSThe delivery room at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and cold steel.

For six grueling hours, I fought through the pain of premature labor, stripped of my dignity, my wedding ring, and any lingering illusions about the man I had married. Julian wasn’t by my side. There was no proud father holding my hand, no sweet whispers of encouragement.

Instead, my hand was held by Diana Cruz, who had stayed through the entire night, coordinating the federal sweep while keeping vigil beside my bed.

“Push, Audrey! One more big one!” Nurse Henderson urged.

With a final, earth-shattering scream that tore through my throat, a sharp, piercing cry echoed through the sterile room.

“It’s a boy!” the doctor announced, lifting a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in a warm blanket. “He’s early, but he’s breathing on his own. Strong lungs.”

They laid him on my chest.

Looking down at his tiny, wrinkled face, dark tufts of hair, and miniature fingers curled into tight fists, a fierce, primal protective instinct flooded my veins. He didn’t look like a Sterling. He had my eyes. He was mine.

“Hey there,” I sobbed, pressing a gentle kiss against his damp forehead. “It’s just you and me, little guy. I’ve got you. I will always protect you.”

Diana smiled, wiping a stray tear from her own cheek. “He’s perfect, Audrey. What are you going to name him?”

“Leo,” I whispered without a second hesitation. “Leo Thomas.”

As the nurse took Leo to the neonatal unit for routine monitoring, the heavy door of the hospital room swung open. Two uniformed local police officers stood at attention, and behind them walked a tall, distinguished man in a charcoal tailored suit with silver-streaked hair.

Arthur Vance, the United States Attorney for the Northern District.

“Agent Cruz,” Arthur nodded, then turned his sharp, intelligent gaze toward my hospital bed. “And Mrs. Sterling... or should I say, Senior Auditor Miller.”

I pulled the hospital sheet up, sitting straighter against the pillows. “You can call me Audrey.”

“Audrey, congratulations on your son,” Arthur said, stepping closer. “I just received the initial brief from the field team. What you unlocked tonight at Sterling Ridge... it’s bigger than we ever imagined. We’re looking at close to forty million dollars in systemic tax evasion, fraudulent government infrastructure contracts, and asset laundering spanning six states.”

“Julian’s signature is on every key transaction dating back three years,” I stated flatly, my voice devoid of emotion. “He thought his mother and sister were smart enough to hide it behind dead men’s names. They weren’t. They were sloppy.”

“And they didn’t realize their in-house accountant was actually the lead forensic investigator assigned to crack their syndicate,” Arthur remarked with a dry, approving smile. “You played a very dangerous game flying under cover, Audrey.”

“I wanted to build a watertight case,” I replied. “And tonight, they gave me all the motivation I needed to finalize it.”

“Well, you won’t have to worry about them reaching you here,” Arthur said, pulling a leather folder from his briefcase. “Sterling Ridge Estate has been seized under federal asset forfeiture laws. Every bank account, trust fund, and luxury asset controlled by Eleanor, Seraphina, and Julian Sterling has been frozen. Effective immediately.”

He paused, sliding a document across my tray table.

“Furthermore, warrants have been issued for all three of them. Eleanor and Seraphina were taken into custody an hour ago while attempting to board a private jet out of a municipal airstrip in Westchester.”

My heart skipped a beat. “And Julian?”

May you like

Arthur’s expression darkened slightly. “Julian managed to slip out of the estate during the initial chaos of the raid. He’s currently running. But our fugitive task force is tracking his phone and credit cards as we speak. He won’t get far.”

Good. Let him run. Let him realize that the life of luxury, privilege, and arrogance he built on stolen money had just collapsed like a house of cards.
