Chapter 8 - THE NEW DAWNSix months after the raid on Sterling Ridge, the estate officially went under the hammer in a government-ordered public auction.

The sprawling vineyard, the crystal chandeliers, the grand ballroom where three hundred elites had once sipped champagne—all of it was sold off to the highest bidder. The proceeds went directly back into the state treasury to reimburse the public funds the Sterlings had systematically looted.
I stood on the balcony of my new home—a quiet, sunlit, modern apartment overlooking the park, purchased entirely with my own hard-earned salary and bonuses from the Department of Justice.
In my arms, six-month-old Leo was giggling, kicking his little legs as he chewed happily on a teething ring. His dark hair was growing in nicely, and he had the brightest, most curious eyes.
My phone chimed on the coffee table inside.
I walked over, balancing Leo on my hip, and picked it up. It was a message from Arthur Vance:
Federal trial concluded. Eleanor sentenced to 22 years. Seraphina sentenced to 15 years. Julian pled guilty in exchange for a 12-year sentence. The syndicate is officially dismantled, Audrey. You did it.
I stared at the screen, letting out a long, deep breath I felt like I had been holding for years.
There was no sense of triumph or bitter vengeance left in my heart. Just profound peace.
The people who had tried to crush me, belittle me, and lock me away like a piece of garbage had destroyed themselves through their own arrogance and greed. They had underestimated the quiet woman in the department store suit, thinking silence was weakness.
They had learned the hard way that when you lock a forensic auditor in a room, you don't silence her.
You just give her time to finish building the case.
“Come on, Leo,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his soft cheek as I looked out at the bright autumn sunshine streaming through the window. “Let’s go outside. It’s a brand-new day.”
May you like
He gurgled happily, reaching tiny hands up to touch my face.
For the first time in my life, everything was exactly as it should be.
