Chapter 9 - ECHOES OF THE PASTTwo years later, the Sterling name was nothing more than a cautionary footnote in business school textbooks and financial crime documentaries.

The rise and fall of the Sterling Ridge syndicate became a classic case study on corporate greed, arrogance, and the fatal mistake of underestimating internal oversight. The media eventually moved on to newer scandals, but within the Department of Justice, Auditor Audrey Miller’s name carried legendary status.

I had been promoted to Chief Director of the State Forensic Fraud Division, leading a team of top-tier investigators tracking down white-collar criminals across the country.

I never remarried. I never needed to. My life was full, balanced, and fiercely protected.

Leo was a bright, energetic toddler now, running around our living room with toy trucks and laughing uncontrollably whenever Diana—who had practically become his favorite honorary aunt—came over for Sunday dinner with takeout pizza.

“You know,” Diana said one evening, kicking her feet up on my coffee table as Leo napped soundly in his room. “I heard a rumor today through the grapevine.”

I looked up from my laptop, raising an eyebrow. “What kind of rumor?”

“Your ex-husband’s mother is petitioning the federal prison board for a compassionate transfer to a minimum-security facility,” Diana smiled, taking a sip of wine. “Apparently, she complains every single day that the inmates in upstate New York don’t appreciate her superior breeding.”

I let out a quiet, genuine laugh. “Some people never learn, Diana. They spend their entire lives believing the world owes them something just because of a last name.”

“And what about Julian?” Diana asked softly, her gaze meeting mine. “Did he ever try to reach out?”

I shook my head, closing my laptop screen with a quiet click.

“No. His attorney sent a brief message six months ago asking if I would let Leo visit him in prison.”

Diana’s eyes narrowed slightly. “And what did you say?”

“I didn’t even dignify it with a response,” I said calmly, looking out the window at the city lights twinkling in the twilight. “Julian made his choice the moment he stood outside that bathroom door and told me to give it ten minutes. He chose his mother, his status, and his cowardice over his own flesh and blood.”

I turned back to Diana, smiling warmly.

“Leo has a mother who fought for him, protected him, and built an honest life from the ashes of their lies. He doesn't need a ghost from a past we left behind.”
