Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastWith Griffin, Paige, and Victor detained in the high-security basement holding cells beneath Cross Tower, the atmosphere in the tower shifted from chaotic panic to absolute, submissive terror. The capos who had briefly entertained the idea of backing Griffin bowed their heads in unison, pledging their unyielding loyalty to the true boss of Boston.

Ezra didn't stay to accept their hollow oaths. As soon as order was restored, he got into the back of his black bulletproof sedan and ordered the driver back to Beacon Hill.
The snow was still falling, blanketing the historic estate in a pristine, deceptive white.
When Ezra stepped through the front door of the mansion, the heavy oak portal swung open before he could even reach for his keys. Standing there was Willa, her pale green eyes shining with quiet triumph, holding a small hand.
"Daddy!"
Rosie screamed the word like a miracle. She broke away from Willa and launched herself straight at Ezra, her little arms wrapping around his legs with fierce, desperate strength.
Ezra dropped to one knee, abandoning all stoicism, all mob boss coldness, and scooped his daughter up into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair. He squeezed her tight, his chest heaving as the emotional dam finally broke.
"I'm here, sweetie. I'm right here. I'm never leaving you," Ezra murmured, kissing her cheek over and over again.
Willa watched them from a few paces away, a gentle, bittersweet smile touching her lips. She turned to quietly give them space, but Ezra’s voice stopped her.
"Willa," he called softly.
She turned back. "Yes, Mr. Cross?"
"Thank you. For protecting her when no one else would." Ezra stood up, holding Rosie in one arm, and looked at the nanny with a new level of depth in his gray eyes. "You aren't just a nanny. And you aren't just an undercover operative keeping tabs on my organization. Who sent you, Willa?"
Willa didn't flinch. She met his gaze directly, her posture relaxing. "My name isn't Willa Sinclair. It's Detective Willa Vance, Federal Task Force on Organized Crime. We’ve been tracking the internal corruption inside the Cross Syndicate for three years. When Nadia died... my agency suspected it wasn't an accident."
The room went dead silent. Rosie hugged her father's neck sleepily, completely unaware of the heavy political bomb just dropped in the foyer.
Ezra stared at her, his eyes narrowing slightly, though without anger. "Nadia's car crash? You think someone in my inner circle touched her brakes?"
"We know they did," Willa replied calmly, taking a step closer. "And now that Griffin and Paige are locked in your basement, the audit trail of Nadia's accounts will point right to them. They didn't just want your empire, Ezra. They eliminated your wife so you would be isolated, vulnerable, and easy to manipulate."
The revelation hit Ezra like a physical blow. The grief he had buried two years ago reopened, transforming from sorrow into a raging, burning fire of vengeance.
"They thought they won," Ezra whispered, his voice dangerously low. "They thought they could tear my family apart and walk away."
"What are you going to do with them?" Willa asked, her pale green eyes searching his face.
May you like
Ezra looked down at Rosie, who had drifted off to sleep against his shoulder, exhausted from days of terror and crying. He kissed her forehead tenderly before looking back up at Willa.
"I’m going to give them a trial," Ezra said with a chilling smile. "A family trial. And unlike the one they planned for my daughter, this one will have no survivors."
