Chapter 7 - The Alliance Forged in FireThree days later, the storm outside had cleared, leaving Boston wrapped in a brilliant, blinding blanket of winter white. Inside the Beacon Hill mansion, the air felt lighter, cleansed of the toxic malice that had poisoned its halls for years.

In the grand study, Ezra sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial restructuring documents alongside Willa Vance.
"The federal task force has officially seized all of Griffin and Paige’s offshore accounts," Willa reported, sliding a tablet across the desk. "With Victor cooperating as a state's witness in exchange for a reduced sentence in a federal penitentiary, the internal leak within the Cross Syndicate is completely sealed."
Ezra looked up from the tablet, his gray eyes fixing on Willa’s pale green ones. "And your task force? What happens to Agent Vance now that the mission is over?"
Willa hesitated, leaning back slightly against the leather armchair. Her undercover assignment was officially closed. She could pack her bags, return to Washington, and resume her normal life as a high-ranking federal investigator. But as she looked at Ezra—and thought of little Rosie upstairs playing happily with her stuffed rabbit—she realized something unexpected had happened.
She had fallen in love with the storm.
"My boss offered me a promotion in D.C.," Willa said quietly, a faint smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Desk job. Safe, predictable, boring."
"And?" Ezra asked, a rare, genuine warmth touching his voice.
"And I told him I'd rather stay in Boston," Willa replied smoothly. "Turns out, the security detail here is much more challenging."
Ezra chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that he hadn't made in years. He stood up from his desk, walked around to the front, and leaned against the wood, crossing his arms.
"The syndicate needs a new head of internal security," Ezra said, his gaze steady and intense. "Someone incorruptible. Someone who knows how to spot a rat before they even crawl out of the sewer."
"Are you offering me a job as a mob enforcer, Mr. Cross?" Willa raised an eyebrow, challenging him.
"I'm offering you a partnership," Ezra corrected softly. "In business, and in this house."
Before Willa could answer, the study door swung open wide, and little Rosie ran in, her face beaming with a bright, joyful smile.

"Daddy! Willa! Come outside! The snow is high enough to build a giant castle!" Rosie cheered, grabbing both of their hands and pulling them toward the balcony doors.
Ezra looked down at his daughter, then across at Willa, whose hand was resting right beside his. The dark winter of betrayal was over. A new dawn was breaking over Boston, and for the first time in years, the Cross family was truly safe.
