Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsDown in the east wing nursery, Rosie sat cross-legged on the plush Persian rug, clutching a small, stuffed rabbit Nadia had given her before she passed. Tears welled in her warm brown eyes, spilling over her flushed cheeks.

"Willa, where is Daddy?" she sobbed softly, looking up at her nanny. "Griffin said he’s never coming back. He said Daddy is gone forever in the dark water."

Willa knelt beside the little girl, her pale green eyes flashing with a fierce, protective fire that she carefully masked behind a gentle expression. She pulled Rosie into a tight, comforting embrace, stroking her dark hair.

"Don't listen to them, sweetpea," Willa whispered, her voice steady despite the hammer beating against her ribs. She knew the danger of this house better than anyone. As an undercover intelligence operative embedded deep within the Boston elite to monitor Syndicate movements, Willa had seen monsters before, but Griffin and Paige were a special breed of psychopaths. "Your father is a survivor. He is stronger than any storm. Trust me."

Just then, the nursery door flew open without a knock.

Paige strode in, her expensive heels clicking sharply against the wooden floor. Her face wore a mask of sickening sweetness that didn't reach her cold eyes.

"Well, well, playing pretend again?" Paige sneered, walking over and snatching the stuffed rabbit right out of Rosie’s hands.

"Give it back!" Rosie cried out, scrambling to her feet. "That's mine! Mommy gave it to me!"

"Your mother is dead, and your father is fish food," Paige snapped, her voice dropping all pretense of kindness. She tossed the toy onto the high shelf out of the child's reach. "Listen to me, you little pest. Things have changed around here. You don't run this house anymore. From now on, you stay in this nursery. No more roaming the halls, no more fancy meals. You eat what you're given, and you stay out of sight, or I promise you won't like what happens next."

Rosie burst into loud, heartbroken tears, backing away until she hit Willa’s legs.

Willa slowly stood up, placing herself as a shield between Paige and the child. Her pale green eyes locked onto Paige with a chilling intensity. "She is a five-year-old child, Ms. Harrington. Threatening her is beneath even you."

Paige scoffed, stepping close enough to glare down her nose at the nanny. "Watch your tone, Sinclair. You're an employee, nothing more. Once Griffin and I finalize the estate transfer tomorrow morning, you'll be thrown out on the street with the clothes on your back. As for the brat..." Paige leaned in, whispering with sadistic pleasure, "she’ll be shipped off to an orphanage in the dead of night. So I suggest you pack your bags now."

"We'll see who's packing tomorrow," Willa replied coldly, her voice carrying a cryptic weight that momentarily made Paige hesitate.

Before Paige could retort, a sharp knock echoed from the doorway. Victor Slade stood there, his face expressionless. "Paige. Griffin wants you in the study. The lawyers are arriving with the final draft of the emergency asset redistribution docs. We need to lock down the offshore accounts before the board catches wind of any discrepancies."

Paige sneered one last time at Rosie and Willa, turning on her heel with a flick of her hair. "Keep her quiet," she ordered over her shoulder. "If I hear a peep out of her, you're both out in the snow."

As soon as the door clicked shut, Willa pulled out a modified burner phone from her pocket, pressing a single speed-dial button. The call connected on the first ring.

"Talk," Ezra’s voice came through the earpiece, low, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

"They’ve accelerated the timeline," Willa reported rapidly, keeping her voice low. "The legal documents are being signed tomorrow morning at ten in the main conference room. They plan to liquidate the primary accounts and move Rosie out of the estate by tomorrow night."

Silence hummed over the line for three agonizing seconds. Then, Ezra spoke.

"Let them sign," Ezra said softly. "Let them dig their graves as deep as they want. Tomorrow at ten, I’m coming home."
