Chapter 16 - The Final VerdictThree months later, the federal courtroom was packed to capacity. Reporters, syndicate associates, and curious onlookers strained their necks for a glimpse of the fallen corporate prince.

Grant stood at the defense table dressed in a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair unwashed, his face hollowed out by months of sleepless paranoia and isolation. He looked older, smaller—stripped of the expensive suits, the corporate titles, and the terrifying aura of invincibility he had used to terrorize my childhood.
When I walked into the gallery on Roman’s arm, wearing a tailored charcoal trench coat and sunglasses that hid the last lingering shadows of my past, Grant turned his head. His eyes locked onto mine with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. He mouthed a single word across the courtroom: Bitch.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply stared back at him with absolute, unyielding indifference.
Federal Judge Margaret Sterling adjusted her glasses, slammed her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack, and read the final sentencing.
"Grant Arthur Mercer, having been found guilty on forty-two counts of racketeering, corporate extortion, witness intimidation, and obstruction of justice, this court sentences you to serve forty consecutive years in the United States Penitentiary, Maximum Security Facility at ADX Florence, without the possibility of parole."
The gavel fell again. The sound echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot.

Grant let out a choked, desperate sound, lunging forward against the defense table before four federal marshals slammed him down against the wood and cuffed his wrists behind his back, dragging him out through the side doors as he screamed our father's name into the empty air.
I watched him go, feeling the last cold weight lift off my shoulders entirely. The monster who had locked me in the basement, who had broken my bones and tried to own my soul, was finally going somewhere he could never reach me again.
