Chapter 18 - The Syndicate QueenSix months after Grant’s sentencing, the transformation of Caruso-Mercer Logistics was complete. We had stripped away the last remnants of the old criminal syndicate, turning the shipping empire into one of the most legitimate, powerful logistics conglomerates on the eastern seaboard.

My office wasn't hidden behind heavy brass deadbolts or guarded by corrupt enforcers. It was on the forty-fifth floor of the new Caruso Tower in downtown Manhattan, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the bustling harbor.

I sat behind a sleek white marble desk, reviewing the quarterly financial projections, when the door opened without a knock. Roman walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee and a fresh edition of the Wall Street Journal.

He tossed the newspaper onto my desk. The front-page headline featured a glowing corporate profile on our leadership, with a massive portrait of the two of us standing side-by-side overlooking the harbor. The caption read: The Power Couple Who Cleaned Up New York.

"The dock captains from Brooklyn are downstairs again," Roman said with a faint, amused smile, leaning against the edge of my desk. "They want to know if you're attending the annual maritime charity gala tonight, or if you're planning to stay home and intimidate our corporate lawyers instead."

I took a sip of my coffee, looking up at the man who had walked into my wedding as a terrifying symbol of vengeance and stayed to become my absolute equal.

"Tell them I'll be there," I said, setting the cup down and standing up to smooth the front of my emerald silk blazer. "And tell the lawyers they better have their financial spreadsheets audited before I get back, or I'll feed them to the harbor myself."

Roman laughed—a rich, genuine sound that belonged only to me—and pulled me close against his chest, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.

"God, I love you, Evelyn," he murmured against my hair.

"I know," I smiled, looking out at the glittering skyline where every ship, every port, and every horizon finally belonged to us. "Everyone does."
