Chapter 6 - The UnravelingGrant’s finger trembled violently against the trigger. He wasn't looking at Roman anymore; he was staring at me, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that the terrified, bruised seventeen-year-old girl he had locked in the basement was entirely gone.

"I'll kill you both," Grant whispered, his voice dropping into a frantic, broken rasp as he took two stumbling steps forward. "I'll kill you and take the ledger back and burn this whole city to the ground!"

He raised the barrel higher, aiming straight for my head.

He never got the chance to pull the trigger. From the shadows behind the rusted cargo containers lining the pier, three red laser dots appeared simultaneously on Grant’s chest. Roman’s snipers had been in position before we even arrived.

"Drop it, Grant," Roman commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute, chilling finality. "Drop the weapon, or your next breath will be your last."

Grant looked down at the red dots glowing against his expensive silk shirt. The color drained completely from his face. The weight of the heavy revolver suddenly seemed too much for his shaking fingers. With a dull, metallic clatter, the gun slipped from his grip and hit the concrete pier.

Before Grant could even draw another breath, two of Roman’s enforcers emerged silently from the mist, grabbing Grant by the arms and slamming him facedown against the hood of his own sedan with brutal, mechanical efficiency.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Grant screamed, thrashing wildly as plastic zip-ties locked tightly around his wrists. "I am a Mercer! You can't touch me!"

"The Mercer dynasty ended the moment your father died," Roman said coldly, walking over and kicking Grant’s discarded revolver off the edge of the pier into the dark, churning depths of the harbor. "And you, Grant... you’re just a footnote in a very bad chapter."
