Chapter 20 - The Empire We BuiltFive years after the wedding at Saint Matthew’s Cathedral, the New York Harbor no longer whispered stories about the blood feuds of the Mercer and Caruso syndicates. Those names belonged to history books, true-crime podcasts, and corporate archives locked away in federal vaults.

Now, they spoke of a new dynasty—one built not on extortion, fear, and locked basement doors, but on absolute control, unshakable loyalty, and an unyielding partnership that nothing in this world could ever break.

We stood on the private wrap-around terrace of our sprawling coastal estate in the Hamptons, watching the sun sink crimson and gold beneath the Atlantic horizon. The salty ocean breeze caught the hem of my silk dress, carrying the distant, low horn of a cargo ship gliding smoothly through the channel bearing the Caruso-Mercer crest.

Roman walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder, exactly as he had done on the first night we discovered each other's scars.

"You're quiet tonight," Roman whispered, his breath warm against my neck. "What are you thinking about?"

I looked down at my hands, resting over his fingers where the heavy gold signet ring caught the dying light of the sunset.

"I was just thinking about what you whispered to me at the altar," I said softly, a quiet smile touching my lips. "When you told me to smile because Grant was watching."

Roman chuckled, a deep, rumbling vibration against my back, and turned me around so I was facing him directly. He looked down into my eyes with the same fierce, unshakable devotion that had rewritten my entire existence.

"And did I keep my promise, Evelyn?" he asked, his voice low and steady. "Did I prove to you that you never have to be afraid of anyone in this world ever again?"

May you like

I reached up, my fingers tracing the sharp, familiar lines of his jaw, feeling the absolute truth of a life I had carved out of fire and survival.

"You didn't just prove it, Roman," I whispered, pulling him down into a slow, perfect kiss as the stars began to ignite across the dark ocean sky. "You built an empire out of the ashes, and you made me the queen."
