Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in the WoodsThe police sirens faded into the distance as Vincent’s elite convoy slipped off the main highway, cutting through a maze of logging roads deep into the dense, foggy pine forests north of Chicago.

Inside the back of a heavily armored SUV, I rocked a sleeping Lily in my arms. The adrenaline crash had finally taken its toll on her, and she had drifted off against my chest, her tiny breaths warm and steady.

Vincent sat across from me, cleaning the slide of his Beretta with a clean cloth. The interior cabin was lit only by the soft, amber glow of the dashboard instruments.

"We can't stay in Chicago," I whispered, breaking the heavy silence. My voice was raspy from crying. "Julian has the federal police, the media, and half the city's politicians in his pocket. If he pins this on you, there’s nowhere you can hide."

Vincent didn't look up from his weapon. "Julian thinks he’s checkmated me. He thinks by leaking those security tapes and framing me for kidnapping, he’s destroyed my empire." He snapped the slide back into place with a crisp clack. "He’s forgetting one very important detail."

"What's that?"

"An empire built on fear doesn't fall because of a press conference," Vincent replied, his dark eyes finally rising to meet mine. "It strikes back."

The SUV slowed to a halt. Outside, a heavy wrought-iron gate slowly swung open, revealing an isolated, heavily fortified stone lodge hidden deep within the sprawling private timber estate owned by the Moretti family. This place wasn't on any public map.

As the vehicle parked, Marco opened the door. "We’re secure, Boss. Perimeter sensors are active. No tail."

"Good," Vincent said, stepping out into the cold night air and holding his hand out to help me down.

Inside, the lodge was warm and rustic, dominated by a massive stone fireplace and walls lined with vintage hunting rifles and historical artifacts. It looked like a retreat from the world—a place where time had stopped.

Vincent walked over to the kitchen, poured a cup of warm milk, and brought it over to me as I settled Lily onto a plush leather sofa with a woolen blanket.

"She’s safe here, Elena," Vincent said quietly, handing me the cup. "No one knows about this lodge except my inner circle."

I took the cup, my fingers brushing against his. I looked up into his intense, unreadable eyes. "Why are you doing this, Vincent? You’re a mafia boss. You don't owe me anything. I was just a nameless maid scrubbing your floors six hours ago."

Vincent sat down in the armchair opposite the sofa, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

"When I saw those scars on your arms today," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver down my spine, "it wasn't just pity I felt. It was recognition."

I blinked, confused. "Recognition?"

"People look at me and see a monster who runs a criminal empire," Vincent said, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace. "They think I was born in the dark. They don't know that when I was a boy, my family was destroyed by men like Julian Vance—men who wear expensive suits, smile for the cameras, and crush anyone who gets in their way while the law looks the other way."

He looked back at me, his gaze fierce and unwavering. "I spent my entire life building power so that no one would ever have the right to hurt me or anyone under my protection ever again. When Julian walked into my house and claimed you like some piece of property... he crossed a line."

Before I could process the depth of his words, the satellite-linked tactical terminal on the heavy oak desk in the corner of the room suddenly chimed, flashing a bright red alert.

Marco rushed over to the screen, tapping the keyboard rapidly.

"Boss," Marco called out, his face pale. "We just intercepted an encrypted data burst originating from Julian Vance’s private foundation servers. It’s not a press release."

Vincent stood up immediately, walking over to the monitor. "What is it?"

"It’s a hit list," Marco said, his voice trembling slightly. "And Elena’s name isn't the only one on it. Julian isn't just trying to recover his runaway wife... he’s executing a complete digital purge of everyone who ever helped her escape."
