Chapter 8 - Infiltrating the Senate GalaThe grand ballroom of the Chicago Heritage Center glittered with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the city’s elite.

Tonight was the annual Charity Gala hosted by State Senator Julian Vance. Billionaires, judges, police chiefs, and high-ranking politicians mingled smoothly beneath the sparkling lights, completely unaware of the storm brewing outside.
On the stage, Julian Vance stood at the podium, smiling charmingly as he delivered a speech about family values, public safety, and integrity in government.
"As public servants," Julian spoke smoothly into the microphone, his voice echoing through the opulent hall, "we have a moral obligation to protect our citizens from the darkness that threatens our society. Criminal syndicates, lawlessness, and those who harbor fugitives have no place in Chicago..."
In the back of the ballroom, standing half-hidden in the shadows beside the heavy velvet curtains, I adjusted the collar of my dark evening gown.
Beside me, Vincent Moretti stood in a tailored black tuxedo, looking every bit the dangerous aristocrat he was. His dark eyes locked onto Julian on the stage, completely unfazed by the hundred armed bodyguards stationed discreetly around the room.
"Are you sure about this, Vincent?" I whispered, my heart pounding against my ribs. "If we're caught here—"
"We won't be caught," Vincent interrupted calmly, adjusting his cuffs. "Julian wanted a public spectacle. He wanted to brand me as a criminal in front of the entire city. So, I gave him what he wanted. I walked right through his front door."
"How did we even get past security?" I asked, looking at the federal agents patrolling the perimeter near the main entrance.
"When you own half the politicians, getting past their rent-a-cop security is just a matter of signing the right checks," Vincent replied with a faint, dangerous smirk.
On stage, Julian wrapped up his speech to thunderous applause. As he stepped down from the podium, accepting handshakes and praises from the crowd, his eyes accidentally swept across the back of the hall.
His smile vanished instantly.
The color drained from Julian’s face as he locked eyes with me standing beside Vincent Moretti.
For a second, the charismatic, untouchable senator froze like a deer in headlights. Then, panic took over. He whispered something to his head of security, shoved past two startled city councilmen, and marched straight toward the back exit, heading toward the private VIP antechamber behind the ballroom.
Vincent didn't flinch. He simply offered me his arm.

"Shall we go greet our host?" Vincent asked softly.
I took a deep breath, hooked my arm through his, and walked forward into the lion's den.
