Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Confession

The ballroom plunged into a cemetery-like silence. Every breath, every heartbeat seemed to stop as the horrific reality of the video sunk into the collective consciousness of the high-society elite.
On the screen, the head chef didn't stop there. As he stirred the deadly chemical into the soup, he muttered quietly to himself, his voice picked up by the sensitive overhead microphone:
"Just a few drops of synthetic tetrodotoxin... Fast-acting, untoxicated by standard autopsies, and completely paralyzing within ten seconds of swallowing. Once the groom drops dead during the toast, the Vance empire's stock will plummet, and our short-sell positions will net us fifty million dollars. Clean, brilliant, and entirely blamed on poor kitchen hygiene."
The screen froze on the chef's wicked smile.
Slowly, agonizingly, every head in the ballroom turned away from the giant screens and locked onto one person: Jonathan Vance.
The groom was no longer just pale; he was swaying violently on his feet. The spoon he had dipped into the soup—the very spoonful Clara had violently knocked from his hand moments before—lay smoking slightly where it had touched the spilled broth on the floor.
Jonathan’s eyes bulged in absolute, primal terror. He clutched his chest, his mouth opening in a silent, agonizing gasp for air. The paralysis was setting in. If he had swallowed even a fraction of that soup, his heart would have stopped beating before he hit the floor.

"J-Jonathan..." Victoria dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering into a thousand sparkling pieces that mirrored her fracturing reality. She lunged forward, catching her collapsing son just as his legs completely gave out. "Medic! Someone call an ambulance! My son is dying!"
The room erupted into total pandemonium. Socialites screamed and trampled over designer chairs in a desperate stampede for the exits, terrified that they, too, might be poisoned. Flashbulbs from hidden paparazzi outside through the glass windows exploded like lightning storms, capturing the ultimate downfall of the untouchable Vance dynasty.
