Chapter 3 - THE DESPERATE RETALIATION

By the following morning, the news had traveled like wildfire.
A video taken by a guest in the lobby—capturing the exact moment Amber called me "the maid," followed by Sarah revealing my true identity—had gone viral on social media. By midnight, it had racked up over five million views. The headlines on news blogs and lifestyle sites were merciless:
"Billionaire Hotel Mogul Disowns Arrogant Son and Daughter-in-Law After Public Lobby Humiliation"
"Daughter-in-Law Calls Hotel Owner 'The Maid'—Gets Instantly Evicted"
I sat on the balcony of my penthouse, sipping black coffee while watching the golden sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean. The air was warm, and for the first time in years, I felt a strange sense of clarity. But I knew Mark and Amber wouldn't accept defeat quietly. Desperate people with fragile egos always fight back—and usually in the messiest way possible.
Sure enough, around 10:00 AM, my phone began ringing incessantly. It wasn't just Mark. It was news outlets, legal reps, and family friends calling to verify the story. I ignored them all, leaving Arthur to handle the fallout.
Then, Arthur called me directly.
"Eleanor, we have a situation," Arthur said, his tone grim. "Mark and Amber haven't left the city. They checked into a cheap motel three miles away, and Mark just filed an emergency motion in county court."
I frowned, holding my coffee cup still. "A motion for what?"
"He’s claiming you are mentally incompetent," Arthur explained. "He’s alleging that your age, combined with the sudden decision to cut off his funding and evict his family, is evidence of severe cognitive decline or early-stage dementia. He’s petitioning for emergency adult conservatorship over you and the Serenity Hospitality board."
A cold, sharp laugh escaped my lips. "He’s trying to Greene me? He wants to take control of my business by claiming I've lost my mind?"
"Precisely," Arthur said. "And because he managed to find a shady local lawyer willing to push the paperwork through on an expedited track, a judge has granted a preliminary hearing for tomorrow afternoon. If Mark manages to convince the judge that you aren't fit to manage your own affairs, he could temporarily seize control of your primary accounts before we even get to present a full defense."
"He really thinks I'm weak," I murmured softly. "He thinks because I’m seventy-two and kept my head down that I’m fragile."
"What do you want to do, Eleanor?" Arthur asked. "We can fight the jurisdiction, stall it out in appeals—"
"No," I interrupted immediately. "Don't stall anything. Let the hearing happen tomorrow. In fact, call the local news stations and tell them the hearing is open to the public. If my son wants to execute me in the court of public opinion, I will give him the front-row seat he so desperately craves."
"Eleanor... are you sure about that?" Arthur warned. "Amber’s team is already leaking stories to tabloids claiming you’ve been acting erratically for months."
"Let them leak whatever they want, Arthur," I said, looking down at the pristine grounds of my resort below. "They think they are playing chess against a lonely old woman. They forgot who built the board."
I spent the rest of the day with my legal team and my personal physician, preparing a file that would not just defeat Mark’s motion, but shatter his entire world into unrecoverable pieces.
That evening, I stepped into the hotel’s private business center. I pulled up the financial records for Mark’s independent marketing consultancy—the company I had funded five years ago under the impression he was building a legitimate business empire of his own.
As I dug deep into the ledger statements with my chief auditor, a dark truth began to emerge from the numbers. Mark wasn't just lazy. He was dirty.
"Look at these transactions, Mrs. Montgomery," my auditor pointed to the screen, highlighting a series of massive offshore transfers dating back eighteen months. "He hasn't just been using your retainer money for personal expenses. He's been embezzling funds directly from the resort group's regional charity foundation."

My heart sank into my stomach. It was one thing for my son to be spoiled, entitled, and cruel to me. But stealing from a foundation meant to provide scholarships for low-income hotel staff children?
That was unforgivable.
