Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING

The courtroom was in absolute chaos. Reporters in the back gallery were scribbling furiously on their pads, and the heavy atmosphere was thick with the scent of an impending legal disaster for Mark and Amber.
Judge Harris read through the forensic audit documents with agonizing slowness. Every time she turned a page, Mark looked like he was about to faint. Amber was hyperventilating beside him, clutching her designer purse like a shield.
"Mr. Montgomery," Judge Harris said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute authority. "These bank statements bear your direct digital signature. The shell company receiving these transfers is Amber Crest Enterprises, registered in your wife's name. Care to explain why two point four million dollars meant for low-income scholarships was transferred into an account that paid for a luxury yacht lease in Miami last month?"
Mark’s mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. He looked at his lawyer, but his lawyer was already quietly backing away from the table, recognizing that his client had lied to him about the nature of the dispute.
"Your Honor..." Mark stammered, his confident posture entirely gone. "I... I was going to pay that back! It was an internal bridge loan for my consultancy firm! Mom, tell her! You knew about that!"
"I knew nothing about you stealing from children, Mark," I said, my voice steady, though my heart broke into a thousand tiny pieces inside my chest. "I gave you everything a mother could give a child. I gave you safety, education, wealth, and opportunity. But I clearly failed to give you a conscience."
I turned back to the judge.
"Your Honor, not only do I request the immediate dismissal of this ridiculous conservatorship petition, but I am also officially presenting these findings to the State Attorney's Office, who are currently waiting in the hallway to serve Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery with formal warrants for grand larceny, wire fraud, and embezzlement."
As if scripted, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom opened. Two state investigators, accompanied by uniformed officers, walked down the center aisle.
Amber let out a blood-curdling scream. "Mark! Do something! You told me she would back down! You told me she was old and scared!"
"Shut up, Amber!" Mark yelled, losing his composure completely as he turned on his wife in front of the entire court. "This was YOUR idea! You were the one who wanted to force her into a home! You were the one who kept spending money we didn't have!"
"MY idea?!" Amber shrieked, standing up and throwing her purse directly at Mark’s head. "You told me your mother was a nobody! You lied to me about where the money came from!"
"ENOUGH!" Judge Harris slammed her gavel down so hard the wooden block cracked. "Bailiffs, secure the courtroom!"
The officers stepped forward, immediately placing Mark and Amber in handcuffs right there in front of the judge's bench. The clicking sound of the steel cuffs locking around Mark’s wrists echoed across the room—a terrifying sound for a man who had never faced a single consequence in his entire life.
Mark turned to me as the officers pulled him toward the side exit, his eyes wide with absolute, frantic terror.
"Mom! Please! Don't do this to me!" he sobbed, all his arrogance completely dissolved into pathetic desperate tears. "I’m your son! Your only child! Dad would never have wanted this! Please, Mom, tell them to stop!"

I looked at my son—the boy I had rocked to sleep when he had fevers, the boy I had worked eighteen-hour days to protect, the man who had sat by while his wife called me a maid and laughed in my face.
"Your father was an honest man, Mark," I said softly, standing tall as the guards pulled him away. "He would have told you that actions have consequences. Enjoy your stay in reality."
