Chapter 4 - DAY IN COURT

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers when my black limousine pulled up to the curb.
I stepped out wearing a tailored navy suit, my hair neatly pinned back, carrying myself with the quiet, unyielding grace of a woman who had spent fifty years commanding boardrooms. The press swarmed, flashing lights and shouting questions:
"Mrs. Montgomery! Is it true your son is taking over the business?" "Eleanor! Did you really throw your family out on the street?"
I paid them no mind, keeping my eyes fixed straight ahead as Arthur Vance walked beside me.
Inside the courtroom, Mark and Amber were already seated at the plaintiff's table. Mark looked immaculate in a custom-tailored suit, trying hard to look like a concerned, grieving son who was forced into this difficult situation out of love. Amber sat beside him, wearing a conservative black dress, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue for the benefit of the reporters sitting in the gallery.
When I walked in, Mark refused to look me in the eye. Amber offered a faint, sad glare, pretending to be the victim.
Judge Rebecca Harris took her seat at the bench, looking down at the legal filings with an expression of deep fatigue. She slammed her gavel down to bring the court to order.
"We are here in the matter of Montgomery v. Montgomery," Judge Harris announced. "The petitioner, Mark Montgomery, is requesting an emergency temporary conservatorship over the estate and assets of Eleanor Montgomery, citing cognitive decline and financial irrationality. Counselor, you may present your case."
Mark’s attorney stood up, straightening his jacket. "Thank you, Your Honor. My client comes here today with a heavy heart. Eleanor Montgomery is a pioneer in the hospitality industry, but at seventy-two years old, her mental stability has rapidly degraded. Just two days ago, without warning or provocation, she suffered a public breakdown at her flagship resort, verbally abusing her son and daughter-in-law, revoking their travel reservations, and cutting off long-standing family financial arrangements without cause."
The lawyer pulled out a stack of printed papers. "We have statements from family acquaintances noting that Mrs. Montgomery has grown increasingly reclusive, paranoid, and erratic over the past year. We believe she is being manipulated by corporate handlers and is no longer capable of managing her massive fortune responsibly."
Judge Harris raised an eyebrow, looking down at me over her glasses. "Mrs. Montgomery, how do you respond to these claims?"
Arthur Vance stood up first. "Your Honor, if I may..."
"No, Arthur," I said quietly, touching his forearm. "Let me speak."
Arthur nodded and sat back down. I stood up slowly, smoothing the jacket of my suit, and walked to the podium. The courtroom went dead silent.
"Your Honor," I began, my voice clear and resonating off the high oak walls. "My son's attorney is correct about one thing: I am seventy-two years old. But he is profoundly mistaken about my mind."
I opened my folder and pulled out a certified medical dossier.
"Submitted into evidence, Your Honor, is a full neuro-psychological evaluation completed just yesterday evening by Dr. Elizabeth Thorne, Chief of Neurology at Miami General Hospital, along with a comprehensive mental competency clearance signed by three independent board-certified physicians. My cognitive scores are in the 98th percentile for adults of any age."
Mark’s lawyer blinked, quickly leaning down to whisper to Mark, whose face was starting to sweat.
"Furthermore," I continued, turning slightly to look at Mark, "my decision to cut off my son’s access to my personal funds was not a 'breakdown.' It was a long-overdue act of parenting."
I pulled out a second set of documents, handing them to the bailiff to pass up to the judge.
"What my son calls 'erratic behavior' was actually the result of an independent financial audit I launched forty-eight hours ago," I said calmly. "An audit that revealed my son, Mark Montgomery, has spent the last eighteen months illegally diverting over $2.4 million from the Serenity Children's Educational Trust into private offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands under his wife’s maiden name."

Amber gasped out loud, dropping her tissue. Mark jumped out of his chair. "That's a lie! That's completely fabricated!"
"SILENCE!" Judge Harris slammed her gavel, her gaze hardening instantly as she scanned the financial forensic reports provided by my team.
