Chapter 9 - A New Dawn Over Lake ComoThree months passed.

The underworld of Milan had undergone a massive cleansing. The corrupt factions were dismantled, the federal investigations were quietly closed under secret Moretti-brokered pacts, and the twelve families now operated under a strict new code of transparency enforced by Alessandro himself.
Villa Moretti no longer felt like a cold, terrifying fortress. The heavy iron gates were still guarded, but inside, the halls echoed with warmth and laughter.
I stood on the expansive marble balcony of the East Suite, sipping a cup of hot espresso as the morning sun rose over the sparkling waters of Lake Como. My days of scrubbing floors and hiding from poverty were a distant nightmare. But I hadn't become a prisoner of luxury either. Alessandro had ensured that I was treated not as a guest, but as an equal partner in the sprawling estate.
Emma was currently sitting in the garden below, chasing butterflies with a brand-new plush rabbit—though she still insisted on carrying the old blue one everywhere she went, refusing to let it out of her sight.
Footsteps echoed softly behind me. Strong arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, familiar chest.
“You’re up early,” Alessandro murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder.
“I like the morning air here,” I replied, leaning back into his embrace. “It feels... clean.”
Alessandro turned me around, his grey eyes searching my face with an intensity that still made my breath catch. “The federal handover is complete. David’s name has been cleared posthumously. He was a hero, Elena. And his legacy is safe.”
I reached up, my hand resting gently against his cheek. “And what about your legacy, Alessandro Moretti? What happens to the mafia king now?”
May you like
He smiled, capturing my hand and kissing my knuckles softly.
“The king,” Alessandro whispered, looking down at the garden where Emma was laughing, “has finally found something worth protecting more than an empire.”
