Chapter 5 - THE HEIR BEHIND THE CURTAIN

The revelation hung in the sterile hospital corridor like a cloud of poison.
Adrian turned slowly to face Helena. The silence between them was heavier than the ocean. Helena lowered her head, tears finally slipping down her pale cheeks. She didn't deny it.
“Is it true?” Adrian asked quietly.
“My father worked in the engine room,” Helena whispered, her voice choked with ancient grief. “He found out that the vessel was loaded with unregistered chemical cargo owned by the Falkner and Vance families. They were using the riverboat for illegal transport. When my father threatened to go to the police, your father’s men locked him in the hold and set the ship on fire to silence him. My mother and I went onto the boat that night to try and break him out.”
Helena looked up into Adrian’s eyes, her gaze raw and unfiltered. “I couldn't save my father. The hold exploded before we could reach him. But as I was running through the smoke, I heard a child crying under the metal grate. I didn't care whose son you were, Adrian. I just couldn't let another person burn to death.”
Adrian took a deep breath, his hands trembling slightly as the full horror of his family’s dark legacy opened up before him. His father had not been a hero or a victim; he had been a murderer who sacrificed innocent lives for profit and framed a dying man to cover his tracks.
“You saved the son of the man who murdered your father,” Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion.
“I saved a little boy,” Helena corrected softly. “And I would do it again.”
Before Adrian could speak, his phone buzzed with an emergency notification from his chief financial analyst. He tapped the screen and read the headline flashing across the corporate network:
FALKNER ENTERPRISES TAKEN OVER IN HOSTILE BUYOUT BY UNKNOWN HOLDING COMPANY: VANCE CORP MERGES WITH SHADOW INVESTOR.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. While Vivienne had been acting as the loud distraction at the hospital, her father, Richard Vance, had executed a silent, brutal ambush on the stock market. Using leaked internal documents, Vance had bought up controlling shares in Falkner Enterprises, stripping Adrian of his position as CEO.

A black limousine pulled up outside the hospital entrance. The rear window rolled down, revealing Richard Vance—a cold, silver-haired man with eyes like flint.
“You were always too sentimental, Adrian,” Richard called out through the window with a cruel chuckle. “Just like your father. You let a girl with a sob story ruin your empire. As of five minutes ago, Falkner Enterprises belongs to me. And your little friend’s mother will be evicted from this hospital by midnight.”
