Chapter 9 - ASHES OF THE FALKNER EMPIRE

Three months later.
The high-society world of the city had been utterly restructured. The Vance family empire was completely liquidated by federal prosecutors to pay restitution to the victims of their faulty pharmaceutical trials. Vivienne Vance was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for attempted murder and corporate conspiracy, while her father faced life without parole.
Falkner Enterprises was officially dissolved, its massive wealth and assets restructured under a new, ethical conglomerate: The Blackwood Legacy Foundation, devoted to funding medical care for low-income families and protecting whistleblowers.
At the helm of the new foundation sat Helena Vance as CEO, with Adrian Falkner serving as her chief legal officer and partner.
On a warm autumn evening, the grand ballroom where Helena had once spilled champagne was empty of pretentious socialites and corrupt politicians. Instead, it was filled with light, soft music, and the laughter of recovering patients from the local children’s hospital.
Helena stood near the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk dress. The back of the gown was cut low, exposing the faint, silver scar across her shoulder blade without shame or hesitation. She no longer hid it beneath high collars or heavy coats; it was no longer a mark of pain, but a badge of honor.
Adrian walked up beside her, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He handed one to her, his gaze lingering on her profile with deep affection.
“You look extraordinary,” Adrian said softly.
“I feel free,” Helena replied, taking a sip and looking out over the gardens. “For the first time in twenty-one years, my mother is sleeping peacefully without fear. The foundation cleared my father’s name yesterday. The city officially dedicated the new maritime safety park in his memory.”
“He would be proud of you, Helena,” Adrian said, turning to face her completely. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Helena’s heart skipped a beat. “Adrian...”
“I know what people will say,” Adrian said, a warm, genuine smile gracing his lips. “They’ll say the billionaire married the girl who saved him. But the truth is, you saved me twice, Helena. Once from the river, and once from becoming the cold, heartless man my father trained me to be.”
He opened the box, revealing a simple, exquisite ring made of refined silver and embedded with a single, brilliant blue sapphire—the exact color of the river under a clear sky.
“Will you marry me, Helena? Not for media leverage, not for revenge, but for us?”
May you like
Helena looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had traded his empire for her truth. A tear of joy slipped down her cheek, and she smiled.
“Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, Adrian.”
