Chapter 1 - THE TRAP CLOSES

The heavy silver clink of Claire’s champagne glass dropping against her plate broke the dead silence of the restaurant. Her perfectly manicured fingers turned ghost-white as she gripped the tablecloth.

"What do you mean, someone was inside the house?" Claire's voice cracked, losing its rehearsed, honeyed sweetness, revealing the sharp, panicked shriek underneath.

Around us, her hand-picked guests—an audience of shallow influencers and sycophants—froze in mid-motion. Forks hovered near open mouths. Eyes darted nervously between Claire, a trembling Daniel, and me. I didn't flinch. I slowly turned my diamond ring around my finger, watching the candlelight fracture against the stone.

"I mean exactly what I said," Daniel stammered, sweat beading heavily on his forehead. He looked at me with pure horror, as if I were a master tactician who had somehow bypassed the laws of physics. "I used the spare key code Claire gave me. I opened the front door. The hallway was dark. Before I could even reach for my pocket toolkit, the lights flicked on. An older woman was sitting in Thomas’s favorite leather armchair by the fireplace, drinking a cup of tea. She looked right at me and said, 'You’re late. I’ve been waiting forty minutes to have a word with you.'"

Claire whirled around to face me, her face flushed with absolute rage and betrayal. "You knew! You knew we were going there!"

"Of course I knew, darling," I replied, my voice calm, rhythmic, and chillingly polite. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the white linen table. "You've been asking about the deed, the locks, and my security system every single Tuesday for the past eight months. Did you honestly think a woman who built a successful logistics empire from scratch couldn't see through your clumsy, amateurish greed?"

Daniel grabbed Claire’s shoulder. "Claire, who is in that house? Who did she hire? If the police—"

"It’s not the police," I interrupted smoothly, cutting him off. "Police departments require warrants for trespassing, Daniel. But private security consultants? Well, they operate under a different set of rules. Especially when they are contracted to protect a private estate from illegal entry."

Claire’s breath hitched. She tried to salvage her pride in front of her friends, forcing a hysterical, high-pitched laugh. "Listen to her! She’s hallucinating! Mom, grief has clearly broken your mind. You’re talking nonsense about private security over a simple misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" I raised an eyebrow, letting a sharp, dangerous smile touch my lips. "Let’s call them and clear up the misunderstanding right now, shall we?"

I reached into my designer handbag, pulled out my phone, and tapped the speakerphone icon. I didn't even need to dial. The call was already active.

A deep, gravelly voice boomed out of the small speaker, echoing clearly across the posh, quiet restaurant:

"Client secure. The subject attempted unauthorized entry at 8:14 PM. All biometric data, surveillance footage, and audio confessions have been securely backed up to the cloud. Do we proceed with the civil lawsuit and criminal filing, Mrs. Vance?"

The color drained entirely from Claire’s face. She looked like a corpse.

"Not yet, Marcus," I said clearly into the phone. "Hold the line. I want my daughter to hear the rest of it in person."
