Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALL

"Daniel?" I spoke sharply into the intercom. "Daniel, look at me! Who's coming?"

There was no answer.

On the security screen, Daniel’s body slumped sideways onto the concrete porch. A dark, heavy figure stepped out from the deep shadows of the large oak tree near the driveway, moving with cold, deliberate silence.

It wasn't a burglar. It was a professional.

Before I could reach for the emergency panic button on the wall, a heavy, dull thud echoed through the front hallway.

Click.

The deadbolt on the front door didn't just turn—it slid open with the terrifying precision of a master locksmith using a bypass tool.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. All my preparations, all my carefully laid traps for Claire and Daniel—I had been so focused on my greedy daughter that I had completely missed the real predator circling in the dark.

I backed away slowly from the foyer, my hand sliding into the pocket of my silk robe, gripping the heavy steel casing of my personal panic remote. One press would alert Marcus and his security team, but they were ten minutes away.

Ten minutes was an eternity when a killer was already inside your home.

The front door creaked open, letting in a gust of cold night air.

Heavy, unhurried footsteps crossed the polished hardwood floor of the foyer. Tap. Tap. Tap.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Eleanor," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice called out from the hallway.

I froze in the doorway of the darkened living room.

A tall silhouette stepped out from under the chandelier light. He was wearing black leather gloves, a dark trench coat, and a calm, polite smile that sent a freezing jolt straight down my spine.

It was Arthur Sterling’s junior partner—the young, brilliant lawyer who had helped draft Thomas’s will for over five years.

"Julian?" I whispered, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay strong. "What are you doing here?"

Julian chuckled softly, adjusting his cuffs. "Oh, Eleanor. Did you really think an old man like Arthur wrote that complex trust all by himself? I drafted every single clause. And more importantly... I inserted the master override key."

Julian pulled a small, sleek electronic device from his pocket, pressing a button. The entire security system of the house went completely dark. The panic buttons on the walls flashed red once and died.

"You see," Julian said, taking a slow step toward the living room, his eyes gleaming with cold ambition, "Claire was just a convenient distraction. While she was busy playing petty thief at your birthday dinner, I came here to claim the real prize."
