Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

A year later, the city had changed. The docks were clean, the local police force had undergone a complete federal cleansing, and Apex Combat Academy had been permanently re-zoned and turned into a community youth center funded by asset forfeiture seizures from the Cruz syndicate.

I stood on the sidewalk across the street, watching kids kick soccer balls and practice martial arts under the supervision of certified, honorable instructors. The shadows that had once choked the neighborhood had been thoroughly scrubbed away by sunlight and absolute, uncompromising justice.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen. A photo text from Marcy.

It was a picture of her standing proudly in front of her college graduation stage, wearing her cap and gown, holding her diploma high in the air with a radiant, unbroken smile that stretched from ear to ear. Above the photo, she had written three simple words:

Thank you, Dad.

May you like

I locked my phone, slid it back into my pocket, and adjusted the collar of my jacket. I felt a quiet, profound sense of peace settle deep into my bones—the kind of peace that only comes when a protector knows his mission has been successfully completed.

I turned around and walked down the sunny sidewalk, my boots striking the pavement with a steady, unbreakable rhythm, ready for whatever tomorrow might bring, knowing that my family was safe, protected, and free.
