Chapter 6 - Confrontation at Hangar 9

Rain poured from the sky in heavy sheets at the private airfield. Thunder rumbled across the tarmac as a sleek, twin-engine corporate jet idled outside Hangar 9.
Inside the hangar, Richard and Vanessa Whitmore were frantically throwing heavy leather duffel bags loaded with gold bullion and bearer bonds into the cargo bay of the aircraft.
"Faster, Richard!" Vanessa screamed over the roar of the jet engines, her designer dress soaked and muddy. "The police are looking for Marcus! It’s only a matter of time before they trace the offshore transfer codes to us!"
"Shut up and keep loading!" Richard snapped, his face pale with sweat. "Once we land in Dubai, none of it matters! That bitch nurse and her pathetic daughter can rot in poverty!"
"I wouldn't buy those plane tickets just yet, Richard."
A voice echoed through the massive, cavernous hangar.
Richard froze. He slowly turned around to see David walking through the open hangar doors, rain dripping from his jacket. Behind him, illuminated by a flash of lightning, stood eighty-one-year-old Margaret Whitmore, holding her cane, alongside a dozen armed federal agents.
"David," Richard sneered, pulling a small silver pistol from his suit jacket. "You always were Grandma’s favorite little pet. Coming here was a mistake."
"Put the gun down, Richard," Margaret said, her voice cutting through the storm like a blade. "It’s over. The state police have Marcus in custody. He confessed everything. The poisonings, the embezzlement, the frame-up."
Vanessa backed away toward the jet, clutching a bag of diamonds to her chest. "Shoot him, Richard! Shoot them both! We can still fly out!"
Richard’s hands shook as he aimed the gun directly at David’s chest. "You took everything from me! That ninety-two million was MY birthright! I built that company while you were playing saint with your lowly little nurse wife!"
"You didn't build anything, Richard," David said calmly, taking a step forward. "You stole it. Just like you stole Mr. Harrison's identity thirty years ago."
Richard’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Elena saved Harrison’s life an hour ago," David revealed, his voice steady. "And before he was stabilized, he told us the truth. The real Richard Whitmore—my actual brother—died in a boating accident in Europe when he was twelve years old. My parents were terrified of losing their share of the family trust, so they adopted an orphan from an overseas asylum and raised him to impersonate their dead son."
Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She looked at Richard, horror dawning on her face. "You... you aren't my grandson?"
"You're a fake, Richard," David said coldly. "You have no legal claim to the Whitmore name, no claim to the estate, and no claim to a single cent of that money."
Richard’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. "NO! I AM A WHITMORE! I DESERVE THIS LIFE!"
