Chapter 19 - The First Real SunriseThe rain had finally stopped by the time we stepped out of the Drake Hotel into the crisp Chicago morning air. The clouds parted, allowing a warm, golden sunrise to spill over Lake Michigan, painting the city skyline in shades of amber and rose.

Waiting by the curb next to an unmarked federal SUV was Chloe.

When she saw us walking down the grand marble steps, she broke into a run, her small sneakers splashing against the wet pavement.

"Grandma! Daddy!" she cried out, throwing her arms around Julian's waist first, then wrapping them tightly around my neck.

Julian knelt down, burying his face in her shoulder, his shoulders shaking with silent, relieved tears. The nightmare that had consumed our family, the deception, the cold darkness of the casket, and the monsters who had tried to steal her life—it was all finally over.

"Are we going home now, Daddy?" Chloe asked softly, looking up with wide, bright eyes.

Julian smiled, kissing the top of her head. "Yes, sweetheart. We're going home. And we're never, ever leaving."

Agent Vance walked up, handing Julian a folded manila envelope containing the final dismissal of all charges and the official seal of protection from the federal government. "It’s officially over, Julian. The network is dismantled from top to bottom."

Julian nodded, shaking the agent's hand firmly.

As we climbed into the SUV, I looked back one last time at the glittering skyline of Chicago. My body ached, my heart bore scars that would never fully fade, and the memory of that faint, desperate scrape from inside the wooden box would haunt my dreams forever.

But as Chloe rested her head comfortably in my lap, humming a quiet, happy tune while watching the city pass by through the window, I knew one thing for certain:

No one would ever put my granddaughter in the dark again.
