Chapter 3 - The Billion-Dollar Bait

Morning brought no relief. Declan bypassed the local police, knowing his wife's former employers—a massive, shadowy pharmaceutical conglomerate called Aethelgard Corp—had the local authorities in their pocket.

He called in Julian Vance, his ruthless head of corporate security and a former black-ops specialist.

"Look at this, Julian," Declan said, throwing the DNA analysis he had run overnight on Hope's saliva sample onto the desk.

Julian scanned the paper, his hardened face tightening. "This is impossible. Her blood contains a synthetic, self-replicating antibody. It’s a universal cure for degenerative cellular decay. Declan... this kid is a walking, breathing fountain of youth. If Aethelgard synthesizes this, they control the global healthcare market. It’s worth trillions."

"My wife created this?" Declan asked, his voice shaking.

"Sarah didn't just create it," Julian said grimly. "She realized Aethelgard was going to weaponize it—selling it only to the ultra-rich while letting millions die. She stole the final strain, synthesized it into her unborn second daughter's DNA, and hid her. Then, Sarah was killed. They've been hunting this child for two years."

"And now she's in my house," Declan said, the crushing weight of reality settling on his shoulders. "They know I have her. They threatened Ember."

"They will destroy you, Declan. They will take your company, your wealth, and your children," Julian warned. "You need to hand the girl over to the authorities. The federal government."

"No," Declan growled, his eyes flashing with a dangerous resolve. "The feds are just as corrupt. If they want a fight, I’ll give them one. We use my wealth. We buy the battlefield."

Within hours, Declan launched a massive, hostile takeover of Aethelgard Corp's parent company. Using his immense financial resources, he began aggressively buying up outstanding shares, driving the stock price into a volatile frenzy. He leaked redacted portions of Project Animus to the press, sending Aethelgard’s board of directors into a state of sheer panic.

He was going to starve the beast.

But the beast had claws.

At 3:00 PM, Declan's phone rang again. This time, it wasn't a synthesized voice. It was a voice he recognized—a voice from his past.

"Declan, my dear boy," said Victor Vance, the CEO of Aethelgard Corp... and Julian’s estranged father. "You are playing a very expensive game. Look at your live security feed of your safehouse."

Declan lunged for his tablet. The screen showed the secure panic room.

The heavy steel door was open. Julian Vance stood inside, holding a silenced pistol to Mrs. Gable's head, while another guard secured Ember and Hope.

Julian looked directly into the camera lens and smiled.

"Sorry, boss," Julian said through the audio feed. "Blood is thicker than water. And my father pays much better."
