Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

Victor Vance panicked. "Shoot him! Kill the drones!" he screamed at his guards.
Chaos erupted. The mercenaries began firing wildly at the ceiling, trying to shoot down the agile drones. Julian drew his gun and aimed it directly at Declan’s chest.
"You think you're so smart, Rhodes?" Julian snarled. "Let's see how your heart rate holds up when you're dead!"
Before Julian could pull the trigger, a small, fierce shadow launched itself forward.
It was Hope.
Using her small teeth, she bit down hard on the guard's arm who was holding her rope, freeing herself. She threw her small body in front of Declan just as Julian fired.
BANG.
The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
"NO!" Declan screamed.
But the bullet didn't hit Hope. And it didn't hit Declan.
Julian gasped, looking down at his own chest. A perfect, blooming red circle was spreading across his tactical vest. He stumbled backward and collapsed to the floor.
Behind him stood Victor Vance, holding a smoking pistol, his face twisted in a mask of absolute, cold-blooded pragmatism.
"He was going to ruin the cure," Victor whispered, his eyes wild and unstable. "He was going to kill the asset. I can replace a son. I cannot replace trillions of dollars."
The sheer horror of a father shooting his own son to protect his profits flashed across the live feed of millions of screens worldwide. The chat feeds on social media exploded in a frenzy of outrage.
Outside, the distant wail of sirens grew rapidly louder. Hundreds of police cruisers, federal agents, and SWAT vehicles—finally forced to act by the overwhelming public outcry of the live stream—were swarming the pier.
Victor realized he was finished. In a desperate, final act of madness, he grabbed the syringe of the unstable antibody and lunged toward Ember. "If I can't have it, no one will!"
Declan didn't hesitate. He tackled Victor to the ground. The syringe flew from Victor's hand, shattering on the concrete. Declan pinned the older man down, his fists delivering years of pent-up rage and grief until SWAT officers burst through the doors, pulling Declan away and dragging a screaming Victor Vance into handcuffs.
The Epilogue: A New DawnOne month later, the dust had finally settled.
Aethelgard Corp was completely dismantled, its executives indicted on global conspiracy and child exploitation charges. The synthetic antibody research was turned over to an international, non-profit medical trust named after Sarah Rhodes, ensuring the life-saving treatment would be distributed freely to those in need.
At the Rhodes estate, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the manicured lawn.
Declan sat on the porch, a cup of coffee in hand, watching the yard.
Ember and Hope were running through the sprinklers, their laughter filling the clean morning air. Hope was wearing a brand new, clean pink unicorn shirt, her hand tightly holding Ember's.
Hope stopped, looked up at the porch, and waved.
"Daddy!" she called out, her voice clear, healthy, and full of life. "Ember says we can make toast! But you have to promise not to burn it!"
Declan smiled, a tear slipping down his cheek. For the first time in two years, the heavy, dark cloud over his heart had completely vanished.

He didn't just save a homeless girl. She had saved his family.
"I promise, sweetheart," Declan called back, standing up to join his two daughters. "No more burning the toast."
