Chapter 5 - Midnight at Pier 42

The rain was relentless, hammering against the rusted metal of Pier 42. Inside the cavernous, dimly lit warehouse, Ember and Hope were tied to two heavy steel chairs, surrounded by medical equipment.
Victor Vance stood over them, flanked by his son Julian and a dozen heavily armed mercenaries.
"They look so much like their mother," Victor mused, tapping a syringe filled with a clear, glowing blue liquid. "Sarah was a genius. A pity she lacked the stomach for true progress."
"Daddy will come for us," Ember cried, her little face streaked with tears. She reached out, trying to hold Hope's hand, but the ropes kept them inches apart.
"Your daddy is a businessman, little girl," Julian sneered. "And businessmen know when to cut their losses."
Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse groaned and slid open.
A lone silhouette stood in the doorway, framed by the flashing lightning. Declan Rhodes walked in, wearing a simple black suit, carrying nothing but a sleek metallic briefcase.
"Ah, Declan," Victor smiled, gesturing to the guards to lower their weapons. "Right on time. Do you have the decryption keys?"
"I have something better," Declan said, his voice echoing in the vast space. He tossed the briefcase onto a rusted table. It popped open, revealing not a hard drive, but a glowing, digital countdown timer connected to a high-frequency transmitter.
"What is this?" Julian asked, stepping back, his hand on his sidearm.
"This is a dead-man's switch," Declan said calmly. "The moment my heart rate goes above 150, or drops to zero, the entire database of Project Animus—including the source code of the synthetic virus—is uploaded to every public server on earth. Aethelgard will be ruined instantly. You'll have no monopoly, no secrets, and a dozen international war crimes tribunals waiting for you."
Victor’s face darkened. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't risk your daughters' lives."
"Try me," Declan said, taking a step closer. "But that's not all. Look up, Victor."

Above them, on the high steel rafters, a dozen tiny, high-definition drones hummed to life. Their camera lenses glowed red.
"We are currently live," Declan said, a grim smile spreading across his face. "On Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and every major news network in the country. Five hundred million people are watching this right now. Say hello to your shareholders, Victor."
